About to turn 1, your baby is more than ready to eat the same food as the family, as long as, of course, it comes in adequate sizes to prevent vomiting, contains the right nutrients for the baby, and isn’t too salty.
It is essential to arrange the food separately on the plate, so that the child learns to recognize the different flavors and is interested in the color of the food. An attitude to avoid is preparing very repetitive dishes or repeating them for more than two days.
How to assemble your baby’s plate
If you’re unsure about food types and amounts, the Brazilian Society of Pediatrics (SBP) recommends a 3:1:1:1 scoop (soup) ratio, with suggestions for variations. It works like this:
3 tablespoons of cereals or tubers: rice, corn, pasta, potatoes, cassava, sweet potatoes.
1 tablespoon of legumes: beans, soybeans, lentils, peas, chickpeas.
1 tablespoon of animal protein: beef, pork, chicken, fish, egg.
1 tablespoon of vegetables: greens (carrots, chayote, beets, squash, green beans) and greens (watercress, lettuce, spinach, chard, chicory).
An interesting way to encourage your child to try new flavors is to have him eat in the company of other children of the same age group, or close in age if he is not yet in school. Oh, don’t forget to do proper baby oral hygiene at every meal.
