At three years and one month old, Athena Macário Silveira is smarter than 98% of the world’s population. At that age, it’s clear that she can’t do complex calculations or understand all of the laws of physics, but she shows signs that she can do all of this with ease beyond what most of us would have. This is because, according to specialized tests, Athena has an IQ of 132while the Brazilian average is 87.

The child became the youngest and also the first person from Amapá to be accepted into the Brazil message, Tupiniquim arm of the British company that brings together people with high IQs around the world. However, they do not use this metric, but the “98th percentile”, because the methodology for evaluating the other can vary depending on who takes the test. Therefore, only the smartest 2% of the planet can join the club.

Like any other child who has just turned three, Athena can be described as evil. She jokes, gets her little friends into trouble, is very curious and pays attention to everything her parents do and repeats it in her own way afterwards. However, what attracts the attention not only of her parents, but also of all those with whom the little girl has contact, is the ease of learning new and expected things for older children.

An example of this, according to her parents, is how she already spoke difficult words at the age of two and even learned to write her own name on her own.

Athena uses her ease of learning to play pranks around the house

“We saw how his development accelerated a bit. From three to six months, he cried a little and tried to vocalize, indicating what he wanted,” recalled his father, urologist Daniel Moreira Silveira, in a ‘interview with Land🇧🇷

At 11 months, Athena was already walking and climbing on household objects.

“We had to move all the furniture around so she wouldn’t climb, fall and hurt herself. Something we’ve never had to do with her older sister, who is 7,” says Daniel, also recalling that Athena was in charge of the early “fun” itself. “One day she took off her diaper and she said ‘I don’t want to pee in my diaper anymore’ and she started using the potty.”

But when night comes, Athena herself warns that it’s time to change the diaper, since she can’t hold her pee in her sleep.

holding the wave

The realization that Athena’s development was progressing faster than usual for children her age only came after a year and a half, by which time the isolation resulting from the Covid-19 pandemic began to ease. “People on the street started noticing us and talking to us,” says her father.

The professionals who examined her and applied the tests pointed out that Athena’s language was on par with the communication of a six-year-old boy, twice her age. According to him, due to his advanced communication and her resourcefulness, she has even earned a nickname: mini adult.

Despite the performance, the recommendation is to hold the wave of Athena🇧🇷 It may seem contradictory, but the child psychologist who accompanies her does the opposite of what was expected, so that she “don’t lose interest”.

“It is neither to teach nor not to teach; it is not to allow. [A psicóloga] she said if she is interested in learning to read, she will teach herself and then when she gets to literacy in school, she will become boring and won’t want to go to class,” the father explains.

This doesn’t always work. since she learned to write her own name by herself🇧🇷 “I read a lot of stories at night and she is very interested. I finish reading and she wants to tell them in her own way. She took us by surprise when she wrote her name, ‘dad’ and ‘mom'”, adds the mother of the girl, law degree Daniela da Costa Macário.

pride and care

Proud, Daniel and Daniela vouch that they are attentive to any difficulties Athena may encounter due to her intellectual capacity. One of the couple’s concerns also concerns their little sister’s older sister, who is seven years old.

🇧🇷We don’t want her to feel inferior, so we explain that her little sister learns faster, but she does other things better too,” says the father. “Each one has a different gift.”

With her whole life ahead of her, Athena will be able to decide which (or which) careers to invest all her intelligence in. Her parents, for now, guarantee that her goal is to encourage her to learn about all of her possibilities, while she has not yet developed a particular interest in any field or activity.

But what is intelligence anyway?

Rodrigo Sauaia, president of Mensa Brasil, explains to the Land that intelligence can be defined as the combination of intrinsic and extrinsic factors of the individual. While the intrinsic ones refer to genetic factors, the extrinsic ones are nutrition, stimuli, experiences and basic learning.

“These two factors combined help in the development of individuals’ cognition and thus help to characterize a person as more or less intelligent,” explains the president. “There are measures of intelligence aimed at characteristics of reasoning, memory, accumulation of knowledge and information, retrieval of this information, agility of thought, interaction between people.”

Being part of an association of gifted people can help in self-knowledge and in the development of this person’s abilities. The president says that once accepted as a member, the gifted person becomes able to receive various benefits offered by the association, such as community interaction and meeting with members from other countries. They can also compete for prizes and scholarships in internal competitions.
