Raw in style, wooden pallets have quickly become a favorite with do-it-yourselfers. The material, used for the construction of various furniture and objects, is truly unique and rarely needs restoration or sanding, as it has the charm of the natural patina which is forced due to the exposure of the element.

Accessible to anyone with the motivation to acquire the materials, most projects only require tools that everyone has around the house. Chevron Center Table - Chevron patterned wooden planks added visual interest to this DIY coffee table by craftsmen Caitlin and Manda of The Merry Thought.  All pallet boards are glued and nailed directly to a plywood base for structural support.

Hanging Herb Garden Pallet: You'll be an Instagram bomb the moment you post this absolutely mesmerizing vertical pallet herb garden.  Artist Zina and her husband have assembled a complete pallet in their backyard.  The plastic trays fit snugly between the slots.  The final touch is the names of the herbs painted on the wood!


Sofa Base - Relax on this sofa with a safe glass of wine knowing you paid for it much less than if you bought it at a furniture store.  That's because a double layer of wooden pallets forms its base, and its only expense is the mats and cushions on top.  As a bonus, pallets provide two levels of storage for flat items.


Pallet Bar - When you need to build a large home bar and are on a budget, should ultra expensive solid wood be the default choice?  Of course.  Do as Rebecca Farrant did and she uses worn pallet boards to instantly give it the look of an old pub.


Reading Nook - Your child will love spending hours with books in this triangular wooden reading nook.  All it takes is a few pallets and wheels to get this cheerful addition to any child's room started.  Since this is a child, pay particular attention to the condition of the surface of the boards.  Fill the holes with wood putty, remove staples and plane chips or sand and other sharp points.

Backsplash - Entrepreneur and antiques dealer Dana of design blog Circa Dee wanted to revamp her old-fashioned kitchen.  A few pallets later and she has a super creative backsplash!  She cut the planks into 18 inch sections and left the wood raw for maximum weathering effect.  Alternatively, you may choose to seal the pallet boards to protect them from moisture.


Pallet Balcony Chair – How about taking advantage of the nice weather to relax with a friend on a double wooden pallet lounger with a matching cocktail table?  Coat the chair in your favorite outdoor paint and your comfortable space on the porch is guaranteed!


Composter – Behind a self-building compost bin?  Almost.  Compost bins always need a generous number of long slots to aerate the organic matter, so pallets form the perfect four walls of the bin.  In addition to the pallets, tie rods were used to hold them in place.
