Mom asked for further evaluation after doctors failed to find a heartbeat and said baby was lifeless
A mother from the UK, Hanna Cole, 27, went through the despair of hearing from doctors that something was wrong with her pregnancy. Her water broke very early, around 20 weeks, and she had to be hospitalized. The day after admission, specialists reported that they were unable to identify an active heartbeat in the uterus, which meant the baby was lifeless.
Hannah would have to undergo an induction procedure to help her body expel her lifeless son. However, she refused to believe her ears.
The mother persisted and asked the doctors to reevaluate before the induction, just to be sure. The doctors agreed, did a new scan and found a heartbeat.
Little Oakley was born alive, albeit extremely premature at 24 weeks and 3 days pregnant, on October 30, weighing 780 grams.
Oakley’s age still requires care. “He It was stressful, with ups and downs,” explained the mother. “He was in intensive care. He was absolutely brilliant. I’m just relieved. It was a roller coaster ride. It’s my Christmas miracle,” says Hannah.
At just 8 days old, the preemie has had his first surgery after being diagnosed with necrotizing enterocolitis, a condition in which the tissues in his intestines become inflamed and die. He also needed to place an ostomy bag (which collects fecal contents) and has already scheduled new surgeries for next year. He still needed mechanical ventilation, but now he can breathe unassisted, which is a win.
“Hopefully we can bring him home in a few months,” his mother said. “I feel a little lost right now because he’s not home,” she says. The boy is expected to remain hospitalized until his due date, February 9, 2023.
According to the Daily Mail newspaper, hospital officials have apologized “for the anguish and anxiety it has caused” the family. “We would like to send our congratulations to the mother and family on the birth of Oakley and wish her the best of luck in her long neonatal journey,” the hospital said in a statement.
In October, Sarah Hollins, director of midwifery at Bradford Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, said: ‘On behalf of the Trust, I would like to offer my sincere apologies for any distress and anxiety this has caused you during your current pregnancy”.
