The Ministry of Health announces the purchase of 2.6 million doses of Coronavac for children

The first doses should be delivered to states next week to continue vaccinating children aged 3 to 11

THE Ministry of Health announced this Saturday 7, the purchase of 2.6 million doses of the Coronavac vaccine, immunizing against COVID-19 produced by the Butantan Institute in collaboration with the Chinese pharmaceutical company Sinovac.

According to the file, an amendment was signed on Friday 6 for the purchase of 750 thousand doses. Another contract is expected to be signed “in the next few days” to guarantee the total volume of 2.6 million doses.

According to a note released by the ministry, “the first doses should be delivered next week and distributed to all states and the Federal District to continue the vaccination of children aged 3 to 11”.

Since 2020, the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) showed resistance in purchasing vaccines from the Butantan Institute, spreading misinformation about the product as it was a vaccine developed in China.

The fact that Coronavac’s godfather was the former governor of São Paulo João Doria (PSDB), a political opponent of Bolsonaro and who differed from the then president in measures to combat the pandemic, also weighed on the posture of the former president – Bolsonaro did not it complied with measures such as mask wearing and social distancing and vaccines that were discredited, proven effective and safe.

The Ministry of Health will purchase another 2.6 million doses of Coronavac

On Friday, the ministry’s new health surveillance secretary, Ethel Maciel, said there were no doses of the covid vaccine to serve the age group of 6 months to 11 years. According to the secretary, the government of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) left the group depleted.

In the note released this Saturday, the ministry reiterated that “it continues in negotiations with the laboratories to guarantee more vaccinations for the public of children as soon as possible”. In Friday’s interview, secretary Ethel Maciel said she will hold meetings with Pfizer to try to anticipate the delivery of childhood vaccine doses.

According to the secretary, the ministry has 3.5 million doses to receive from the American company for the public aged 6 months to 4 years and another 4.5 million doses for the 5 to 11 year group. The ministry’s idea is to negotiate for the volume to be delivered in January.
