World Heritage: 7 Brazilian states compete for the title

The selected list of places recognized as World Natural Heritage is expected to be published by the end of this month

Brazil is the right destination for tourists who want to know natural and lush scenery. After all, our country is home to the greatest biodiversity on the planet, with breathtaking beaches and forests. But the truth is that all Brazilian soil has magnificent landscapes, right? Therefore, the NGO World Heritage Clock (WHW) has compiled a list of seven Brazilian wonders that can receive the title of “natural heritage of humanity” offered by UNESCO.

World Heritage: 7 Brazilian states compete for the title

You Lençóis Maranhenses, on the east coast of Maranhão, one of the best-known and most beautiful destinations in the country, was one of the candidates. The place is famous for its sand blankets and pools of fresh water. Additionally, it served as a location for film productions, such as the box office hit ‘Avengers: Infinity War’ (2018).

In addition to Maranhão, beauties from other states are also in the running, such as, for example Serra da Capivara (PI), the Itatiaia Park (RJ), the Raso da Catarina (BA), the caves of Peruaçu (MG), the marshes of Taim (RS) and the Serra do Divisor (AC).

Disclosure of Winners

The list of places awarded will be published during the day January 23rd. While unofficial, it supports the authorities who determine which sites will be elected. The nomination is made by the host country, to then be sanctioned by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.

However, as UNESCO receives applications from every country in the world, his team is unable to assess everything quickly. Therefore, the expectation is that the seven locations indicated will be recognized as natural heritage of humanity in the next 15 years. In addition to these, other areas are under evaluation, such as the archipelago of Abrolhos, in Bahia, and the canyons of Serra Geral, in Rio Grande do Sul.

Areas already titled

It is not the first time that the country has a natural heritage recognized by UNESCO. Seven Brazilian destinations already have the title. They are: Pantanal (MT/MS), Central Amazon (AM), Discovery Coast (BA/ES), Atlantic Islands Complex (Fernando de Noronha and Atol das Rocas), Iguaçu National Park (PR), Ribeira Valley ( PR/SP) and the Chapada dos Veadeiros/Parque das Emas complex (GO).
