The pandemic has been a process of profound change for the American lawyer who lives in this apartment 160 sq m, who left New York to fulfill an old dream of visiting South America and ended up falling in love with Brazil, especially Rio de Janeiro. What was supposed to be a short season ended up extending for months, until she decided to put down roots in the capital Rio de Janeiro.

He sought out the architects Marina Romeiro and Felipe Maia, del Maia Romeiro Architectureto order a complete renovation project, including decoration.

“Overall, he asked us for a circular plan so you can access the rooms without having to go around the entire property, the elimination of one of the three bedrooms to create a master suite with walk-in closet and the kitchen extensionwhich incorporated part of the adjoining bathroom”, says the architect Marina.

-

“Regarding the decoration, the client wanted an apartment cleanwith a more masculine imprint, without excesses, and a relaxed atmosphere, in tune with the seaside lifestyle of southern Rio de Janeiro”, adds partner Felipe.

The basis of the room, as well as the whole apartment, is neutral, permeated with natural woods, gray tones and black accentsso that the American has more freedom to change the style of the house in the future, without having to do major renovations – after all, he loves to travel and take mementos with him wherever he goes.

-

THE floor, for example, was covered with strips of cumaru. “Since cumaru is a slightly dark wood, in order not to weigh it down visually, we opted for American oak, with a lighter shade, in most of the joineries”, Marina points out.

-

With the exception of the curtain, which is white, most of the fabrics have shades of gray, as does the light carpet, which adds a cozy touch to the space.

The colors appear in muted tones in the cushions and vibrant in the gallery wall at the entrance and in the greenery of the plants. In the dining room, color is also present through the two paintings leaning against the sideboard, in contrast with the cement texture of the wall in the background, which imitates cement rulers.

According to the architects, the combination of design and comfort led the selection of furniture for the living room, with particular attention to the Trevo Drink armchair, signed Prototype, the Teca bar trolley, by designer Jader Almeida, and the Agda dining chairs. All the paintings in the room were purchased by the client in the USA during the development of the project.

-

Another highlight of the apartment is the bedroom which has been transformed into an office, adapted to welcome guests. Because the client wanted a cool background for online meetings and didn’t like the idea of using one sofa bed intended for guests, the architects designed a foldaway bed camouflaged in a slatted panel, flanked by two wardrobe modules.

-

“The slatted panel also appears in the circulation room, mimicking both the door to the social bathroom and the office,” reveals Felipe.

-

The kitchen has L-shaped Ultracompact worktops, with space for quick meals, and a tile panel with a blue modernist print, reminiscent of swallows.

-

The kitchen and service area are separated only by a sliding door, made of black metal carpentry with fluted glass, allowing not only the integration of spaces (when necessary) but also the presence of natural light that enters from the window next to the washing machine.

Here the aesthetic language and the choice of materials follow the pattern adopted in the room, with a more neutral base, permeated with wood, gray and white.
