The idea is to reflect moments of tension experienced in the present

Di Gioia Giudici – What do people need today? This is the question that Prada brought to the catwalk by presenting its new winter men’s collection at Milan Fashion Week.

“In serious moments you have to work seriously, do the job, be responsible. There is no room for useless creativity”, declared Miuccia Prada at the end of the show of the garments she designed in collaboration with Raf Simons.

“Creativity when needed, and I discover something, gives us something new, that’s fine, but this isn’t the moment if you’re in contact with reality and current events because you follow cinema, art and politics – and therefore stay in tune with what’s going on. And that’s the problem,” he adds.

Miuccia and Simons say they are “very attentive to what is happening in the world, to problems and difficulties”.

“This collection is our reaction to a difficult historical moment. We work honestly to create clothes that are useful for people, that represent our idea of reality out there. We want to create fashion with meaning and meaning and that is the value of fashion today “, they point out.

And what do people need today? The response on the runway – under the watchful eyes of the K-pop group Enhypen, which attracted hundreds of girls in front of the show’s headquarters – oscillates between essential tailoring and an almost romantic softness.

Thus the minimalist jackets, without fringes, are combined with shirt collars with elongated ends, attached to mesh embroidery, with a trompe-l’oeil effect, while the nylon jackets have enlarged or reduced shapes, the overcoats are very long or as short as Spencer, short trousers and thin ties, worn under suede business suits. Meanwhile, tiny cardigans go against bare skin, utilitarian overalls are made from tweed and have overstuffed pillows.

All this to give an idea of ”comfort, safety and security”, according to Miuccia. That is, the things needed today.

For this, Simons points out, “we worked hard on clothes related to reality and, at the same time, we took them to another level of style”.

«We worked on a reduction of tailoring, which I don’t like to define as minimalist because minimalism is something cold and distant – and we did the opposite, giving an idea of behavior and warmth, as in network fragments. And, in some gestures that are part of Prada’s history, creating a balance between two opposites,” he adds..
