The baby is saved in surgery inside the mother’s womb with the help of an innovative technique

Also during her pregnancy, Rafael developed rapidly growing lung cancer and needed an operation while still in his mother’s womb; the puncture was made in the hand of the fetus

Rafael was just one kilo and 28 weeks old in his mother’s womb when he faced his first big challenge. diagnosed with cystic adenomatoid malformation of lung, a kind of fast-growing benign tumor, needed to be operated on before officially coming into the world. Still in the mother’s womb, the fetus was operated on so that the doctors could remove the solid mass which already occupied 90% of the rib cage and was compressing the lungs and heart.

“In most cases, when we diagnose this malformation, we monitor the growth of this mass and administer steroids to reduce its volume and postpone surgical treatment until after birth. In Rafael’s case, we administered steroids, but there was no answer. The only option was surgery. If the tumor continued to grow, the fetus would die,” says surgeon and obstetrician Antonio Moron, head of the Fetal Medicine service at Hospital e Maternidade Santa Joana, where she was performed the procedure.

In front of the painting, the team informed psychologist Monique Araújo Batista, 46, mother of Rafael, that she and the child would have to undergo the operation. “When I was diagnosed, I just cried because you don’t imagine this kind of thing when you’re pregnant. It was very scary, but I had no doubts about having surgery. The doctors said if we didn’t In In this case, the chance Rafael survived was 5%. If we did, it would be 50%,” he says.
