Despite the similar appearance, adult acne has its differences: it occurs mainly in women and in specific points of the face. “This condition is characterized by nodular, often painful, cystic lesions that last seven to ten days. They appear on the chin and lateral cheeks and may also be present in the hairline,” explains dermatologist Daniel Cassiano, a member of the Brazilian Society . of Dermatology.

What are the causes of adult acne?

The condition is multifactorial, that is, it can have different causes. But, according to the doctor, the best known are the inadequate stimulation of hormone receptors, changes related to the thyroid gland and stresswhich today is one of the main causes capable of stimulating the increase in cortisol and adrenaline.

“Stress hormones induce an inflammatory reaction. Therefore, almost always this type of acne has an indication of discomfort, with local hypersensitivity and after three days, on average, inflammatory comedones appear – which are related to the premenstrual period, the use of oral contraceptives or in the form of patches, or even intrauterine devices,” explains the dermatologist.

These hormonal changes stimulate the sebaceous glands to overproduce sebum, which causes an increase in the proliferation of bacteria that cause acne. Additionally, wearing makeup can also cause pores to become clogged, making the problem even worse.

But there are still others life habits that confirm the onset and worsening of adult acne, such as food. “You also need to pay attention to the exaggerated consumption of trans and saturated fats and high glycemic index foods that cause inflammation to worsen and resistance to healing and the persistence of the condition,” comments Dr. Daniele Cassiano.

Treatments for adult acne

Adult acne can be treated with soothing soaps based on anti-inflammatory extracts, with use twice a day. But there are still other possibilities, according to the dermatologist. “At night, we can indicate vitamin A acid, every other day. We can also use salicylic acid, clindamycin and benzoyl peroxide,” he explains. In the morning, the dermatologist recommends light gels with a calming and healing action.

However, it is worth remembering that in order for it to take effect, you also need to change your lifestyle. Problems such as poor sleep, smoking, diet, and lack of skin care need to be changed for treatment to be effective.

“For this reason, the patient needs to be investigated, with a detailed history being taken with survey of all hormones, lifestyle habits and stressful situations. The conduct should be based on the significant control of these factors”, underlines the doctor.

Clinical treatments can help too, especially when dealing with oiliness, scarring, and adult acne blemishes. “You peeling can be used to decrease oil production. As for sequelae, we can use microneedling or laser to improve skin relief,” concludes Dr. Cassiano.

So, if you notice resistance from your regular acne treatments, seek medical attention. Then you will get professional help to solve your problem.
