What is the best airfryer on the market?

“Paladar” staked fryers from eight brands and tested whether they deliver what they promise; to watch!

What is the best airfryer on the market?

“Wow, I didn’t know there were so many fryers to the market.” This sentence was repeated by all the jurors invited by the taste as soon as each arrived for testing. Not for nothing. To check the efficiency of the equipment, the section team was able to search for models from eight different brands, and there are other options for sale as well. Therefore, if you’re looking for an airfryer to call your own, don’t you dare complete your purchase without verifying the result of this test first.

The differences don’t just appear in the design of the air fryers, but also in the power and type of technology used to “fry without a drop (or almost) of oil” – specificities that directly interfere with the result of the recipes prepared in the small appliance. Other details, such as the capacity of the basket and the price, of course, must also be taken into consideration when choosing. All these themes – with greater weight for the quality of the food prepared – were taken into consideration by the jury to form the ranking of the best airfryers on the market.

Speaking of the jury, it was made up of chefs Daniela França Pinto, Gustavo Rodrigues, Jorge Gonzalez and Thiago Maeda – experts in frying (by immersion in oil, in this case) – and the journalist who will speak to you. Divided into two teams—the French fries team and the chicken bird team—the judges put the fryers into play, following the time and temperature guidelines found in each fryer’s manual.

The results were very different from each other. While some fryers delivered great potatoes in about 15 minutes of preparation, others slipped in the process and offered versions that were soggy, burnt, or had the characteristics (including taste!) of reheated potatoes.

As far as chicken and fowl go, few brands have managed to get anything close to what you’d expect from a fried chicken (with a dry, crispy skin). “In my opinion most delivered good versions of roasted chicken, not fried,” reflects Gustavo. It makes sense, because even if the small appliance is dubbed electric fryer, its operation is actually more similar to that of a convection oven. His system consists of an electric resistance and a propeller, which together create a stream of hot air to cook the food.

1 oster

template: OFRT950

power: 1,300W

capacity: 3.3l

price: BRL 559.90 (in the promotion), on www.oster.com.br

It was undoubtedly the air fryer that delivered the best recipes, with characteristics that, in fact, simulate that of frying in oil by immersion: crispy potatoes on the outside and soft on the inside and a juicy chicken, with an unrivaled crust. The digital panel makes it easy to set the exact time and temperature, and even allows you to pause machine operation whenever you open the drawer.

2nd Philips Walita

template: RI9217

power: 1425W

capacity: 4.7l

“The pioneer, the true, the number one in the world”, as the brand itself is keen to point out, also performed very well in tests. There is nothing to complain about the recipes – crispy and soft potatoes, juicy chicken with a crispy skin. Points lost for the grate of the basket, which has stuck part of the skin of the chicken. Another point to correct is the button that separates the basket from the drawer which, having no protection, can be pressed accidentally and cause an accident.

3rd Britain

template: BFR15P

power: 1,500W

capacity: 6l

price: BRL 549.90, at www.britania.com.br

In addition to the attractive price and the capacity of the basket – the largest of all the fryers tested – the brand’s equipment took the last place on the podium in the test taste by the efficiency and quality of the recipes. In just over 15 minutes of prep time, the potatoes had reached a crunch (that actually resembled frying) and in under 30 minutes, the chicken was juicy and with a crec-crec crust.

4th World Cup

template: AFN-40-Bi

power: 1,500W

capacity: 4l

price: BRL 629.91, on www.emondial.com.br

The square basket (with non-stick coating) guarantees a better use of space – point for the brand’s airfryer, which, in the potato test, also proved to be the most efficient: in 15 minutes of preparation, it delivered very tasty “French fries” . In the chicken and bird stage, however, the equipment skidded in terms of performance. Despite the crispy shell, the bird pieces were very dry inside.

5th Electrolux

template: EAF11 by Rita Lobo

power: 1,400W

capacity: 3.2l

The equipment behaved differently in the two test phases and therefore did not reach a higher position in the table. While the potatoes, despite their golden good looks, were wilted (after 20 minutes of prep time), the chicken fowl retained its internal juiciness packed by an evenly colored, crunchy shell.

6th Philic

template: PFR15PG

power: 1,500W

capacity: 4l

price: BRL 499.90, on www.philco.com.br

The result of both recipes did not please the judges. The potato, in addition to being wilted, “seemed to be heated”, with a strange taste. The Chicken with Birdie came out of the basket with some burnt spots, which brought some bitterness. A more precise manual regarding preparation methods (mainly regarding quantity of ingredient x time) could solve the problem.

7th year

template: Easy frying EZFV

power: 1,100W

capacity: 3.2l

price: BRL 499.99, on www.arno.com.br

The air fryer failed the judges due to the result of the recipes. The potatoes, even after 30 minutes of preparation at 180ºC, as indicated in the manual, remained pale and wilted. As for the chicken, despite being juicy and tasty, it looked more like a roasted version than a fried one, contrary to expectations. Perhaps the low efficiency is due to the power of the equipment (1,100 W), which is the lowest of all the airfryers tested.

8th Polish

template: iChef – TuttoSpazio

power: 1,500W

capacity: 4l

price: BRL 809.99, on www.polishop.com.br

The low performance of the equipment in the test is mainly due to the poor result of the recipes. The potatoes, whose preparation was repeated precisely to remove the load (with less preparation time), did not cook evenly in the two rounds – while some came out with very burnt ends, others remained pale and wilted. As for the chicken, in addition to being burnt, it didn’t reach the desired crunchiness.

Daniela France Pinto (@danifrancapinto)

Chef of the Cortés restaurant, where he prepares more than seven tons of fries a month, he is also consultant chef at the French restaurant La Casserole, whose “chips maison” shine in the company of steak tartare and mussels in a white wine and herbs. Before the test, he was already thinking about buying an airfryer for home use, and now he’s sure he will.

reporter from taste, had the idea of organizing the air fryer test when she decided to buy the equipment for her new home and was lost in front of so many brands, models and prices. “Now I have the knowledge to invest that money without the risk of regrets,” she jokes.

Gustavo Rodríguez (@gustavo_rodrigues)

The chef of the Brazilian restaurant Lobozó prepares a respectable fried chicken – the portion is served with pequi mayonnaise and tamarind sauce. He went to the open-heart test, but found that none of the equipment tested was able to mimic the results of deep frying.

He is a chef and partner at Buzina, whose kitchen ships several kilos of fries a month. Thin, crunchy and slightly spicy, they shine in a solo presentation, in the portion of fries, and also make a special participation in the filling of the hamburger that bears the name of the house (yes, Jorge puts the fries in the center of the hamburger! )

He’s a chef, cafe owner, and knows frying like no one else: Maeda is in charge of the kitchens at Koya 88 and Bagaceira. Participating in the test made him reflect on how the industry works to make home life easier, but, according to him, “there is still a long way to go before air fryers are able to deliver a result equal to that of a nice fry “.

Five tips to get the most out of your Airfryer

  • Read the manual: and check the details on how it works; it is possible that you bring suggestions for the recipe you intend to prepare
  • Preheat the equipment: with the basket still empty, turn on the fryer for five minutes at 200ºC (or according to the manual)
  • Don’t fill the trash: warm air needs space to circulate; if necessary, divide the preparation into two or more phases
  • Shake the trash: or turn the ingredients halfway through cooking; so that the pieces fry/cook evenly
  • A little oil is fine: for every 300 grams of potato sticks add a spoonful of oil (except for pre-fried and frozen versions); in the chicken, add a drizzle of olive oil to the other seasonings
