It’s not just adults who “embark” on this attempt, that is, many teenagers opt for work in the gym. This is where the question arises: is bodybuilding allowed in adolescence?
Answer and example of bodybuilding in teenagers
“It is the great hormonal discharge process for both females and males. The morphophysiological structures end up undergoing significant changes during this period. The important thing is to exercise in adolescence, but you can do weight training as long as you are guided by a professional, who trains with not too high a load”, says physical educator Zair Cândido de Oliveira Netto in an exclusive interview for the sports life.
The warning is not to go beyond the work of 80% of the maximum load for an adolescent to preserve joints, tendons and ligaments from possible injuries. What makes the difference is the detail at the moment of the exercise, i.e. the measure that prevents postural problems. Necessity is the action of muscular proportionality in favor of agonist and antagonist muscles.
“Often, what happens is that the teenager does a lot of exercises for the pectorals and forgets to do them for the spine, which ends up causing problems. The teenager has a strong chest and a weak back. So, there will be one imbalance of forces, which can generate kyphosis and spinal deviation. You have to be careful, “adds Zair.
Precautions
Asked if there are any work restrictions for adolescents, Cândido vetoed pure strength or heavy load work for hypertrophy because there will be a “breakdown” of 80% of maximum load, injury and damage to joint development of adolescent muscles.
Another consideration from this practitioner is that there is no urgency for supplements at this stage due to the ideal type of training for the audience in this age group. Likewise, the concept of healthy eating is indispensable because at that time teenagers tend to eat irregularly. Medical and nutritional follow-ups are a priority.
“Now the energy requirement for the type of training does not require whey protein intake. It is the work of training. It is not the work of muscle mass and power. The goal is to prepare the skeletal structures and functional to adulthood”, Netto guide.
Zair also states in a dialogue with the Sport Life report that the ideal thing is for the teenager to do weight training three or four times a week because it allows for recovery time. “Every day would be an unnecessary load for a teenager. If he reconciles with another sport, do it twice a week,” specifies the professional.
Bodybuilding is preferred by Brazilians
Bodybuilding is an established sport in Brazil. The proof is the study by Unicamp (University of Campinas) published in February 2020. The researchers analyzed the epidemiological data of 60,202 people over 18 years old. As a result, walking is the main physical activity of Brazilians, and football and bodybuilding appeared soon after, respectively.
