Caviar with Doritos? Understand the new phenomenon of TikTok

Does caviar go with Doritos? TikTokers say yes! Caviar is an expensive staple that has become synonymous with ostentatious wealth. The delicacy is usually served with salted or toasted crackers. In a TikTok trend, caviar has gained at least curious accompaniments, which have piqued the interest of users and the ire of chefs.

It all started with American influencer Danielle Matzon, who posted a video of eating caviar with wholemeal bread and lots of butter. The video went viral, reaching over eight million views and 500,000 likes.

The success of the publication has spawned a series of videos that have produced curious – and often bizarre – combinations. American TikTokers have gone viral by posting videos consuming the delicacy with fries and Doritos.

Danielle didn’t start the trend by accident, however: Her family owns a brand of caviar. The influencer has used her reach on TikTok to popularize food and has managed to create a trend that directly benefits her family’s business. TikToker has become something of an ambassador for caviar on the internet, but its culinary inventions haven’t been to everyone’s taste.

Chefs have shown outrage at TikTokers’ inventions, especially when influencers mix caviar with snacks. American cooks expressed their views in interviews with the Washington Post, pointing out that salty snacks spoil the taste of eggs, wasting food.

Although most professionals frown on pairings, the videos have given caviar exposure, bringing the public closer to the luxury food. Culinary phenomena on social networks are usually criticized by professionals in the sector, but they are very important in the diffusion of gastronomic news, even if through bizarre things like caviar with Doritos.
