Does Veganism Affect Sports Performance? Understand

Veganism is a person who does not eat meat, milk, honey or any other food of animal origin. That is, sources of energy are basically fruits, vegetables and greens. Even so, this question arises: Does veganism interfere with my sports performance?

Response and recommendation

“No. After all, a vegan diet is characterized by a rich variety of nutrients. Including proteins. The main benefits are higher performance, less fatigue during intense exercise, less joint pain, less body fat, more muscle recovery fast with the reduction of post-training and post-match inflammatory processes”, said the nutritionist of the Hospital Universitário Cajuru, in Curitiba, Francielle Gouveia in an exclusive interview for the sports life.

When asked how the professional compensates for the lack of animal proteins, Francielle listed a series of examples and, moreover, did not spare the benefits for those who adopt this model of nutrition.

“Consume other sources of protein, in this case vegetables, such as: beans, lentils, peas, chickpeas, soy, quinoa, tofu, etc. These foods are also rich in iron, B vitamins and amino acids, present in the protein group “, he clarifies.

Consult the expert

These benefits cited by nutritionist will definitely motivate you to adopt this habit. It is not true? The fact of the matter is that the power of patience is essential to incorporating this modality into your daily life, i.e. not starting on the basis of “let’s go” or because you saw someone with impeccable condition after three months as a vegan. Follow-up will also help you.

“Veganism is a diet that excludes the consumption of foods of animal origin, i.e. proteins and derivatives, such as milk and eggs. It is a restricted, healthy diet, but which needs to be accompanied and assisted by a specialist. Especially when combined with physical exercises”, advises the nutritionist.

Research in Brazil and in the world on veganism

IBOPE (Brazilian Institute of Public Opinion and Statistics) accused through its study in 2018, that 14% of Brazilians declare themselves vegetarian. This analysis also adds that in the metropolitan regions of São Paulo, Curitiba, Recife and Rio de Janeiro, the index has risen to 16% of the population. These percentages represent a 75% increase over 2012, when this survey was completed.

The Harris Interactive Institute has ensured in its work that approximately 50% of vegetarians (16 million people) consider themselves vegan in the United States. Another data available in Europe is from the Ipsos MORI Institute, which revealed that 33% of vegetarians, 1.68 million people, claim to be vegan in the UK.
