The disease requires medical attention and should be treated appropriately, but physical activity can help
It is common to frequently find people suffering from reflux. However, not everyone knows exactly what it is, how to identify it and fight it.
Proctologist and digestive surgeon, Dr. Rodrigo Barbosa explains that reflux is considered a disease and heartburn is just a symptom. “There are other symptoms besides heartburn such as chest pain, regurgitation, cough, hoarseness, throat clearing, and so on. All these appear due to corrosiveness caused by digestive acids. Usually, they are a consequence of eating fatty foods, processed foods and spicy foods — considered the big villains for reflux sufferers,” she points out.
Although reflux is unrelated to gastritis and stomach ulcers, Dr. Rodrigo warns of the need to investigate the disease. After all, it can be discovered by a clinical analysis or through specific tests.
How to relieve the effects of reflux
“It is worth noting that the disease needs to be treated properly and herbal teas, antacids, stomach protectors, etc. are not enough. The essential measures are: chew well, do not drink liquids during meals, lose weight, avoid smoking, eat sparingly and do not lie down immediately after meals, furthermore food re-education with fat reduction and medical follow-up are essential, since in the most serious cases surgery may be the only salvation”, he adds.
And of course the physical activity it also has its contribution to alleviate this evil. “The practice of the exercises has a beneficial effect on subjects with gastroesophageal reflux, due to the increase in the containment of the esophageal sphincters, preventing the return of stomach contents. Furthermore, it has a beneficial effect on the intestinal flora, which reduces gas production, bringing the feeling of well-being”, he concludes.
