Wrinkles: understanding how they form and how to treat them

These alterations appear mainly in the region of the forehead, eyes and neck.

Wrinkles are not always the same and can be caused by many reasons. According to Dr. Claudia Melòcosmetology specialist at the BWS Institute, there are three main types of these changes: dynamic, static and gravitational.

It is important to know the main types of wrinkles to treat them correctly |

“Basically they appear due to the loss of the structural matrix of the skin (collagen and elastin) and due to expression movements. Understanding the cause and type of wrinkle is essential to guide treatment,” he explains.

The doctor points out that, in general, expression lines are the first to appear. “Because we have different muscles on the face, this dynamism with repeated movements generates expression lines,” he says. Dynamic wrinkles occur with muscle contraction, hence skin wrinkles, according to Dr. Claudia.

He further explains that, initially, this wrinkle is evident with muscle contraction, but, over time, this constant movement causes a dermal fracture, leaving the wrinkle evident even without muscle contraction, which is called static wrinkles. .

There are also fine lines that appear due to loss of skin structures, reduction of elastin and collagen. “That way there is a chapped look. The fine lines are not related to the muscle contraction of the face, which we see with expression lines,” says the cosmetology specialist.

Gravity wrinkles can strongly demarcate the skin and are related to facial relaxation and disorganization. “There is flaccidity in the muscle layer, the subcutaneous layer (subcutaneous septae, hypertrophy or atrophy of the facial fat pads), and the epidermis,” she says.

More common in mature and photoaged skin, deep wrinkles are those that reach a layer of skin closest to the adipose (fatty) tissue. “So deeper furrows form,” says the doctor. Expression lines can be found in people between the ages of 20 and 40 and get worse over time.

How to treat?

To treat fine and gravitational wrinkles, Dr. Cláudia Merlo indicates that biostimulators or injectable collagen technology can be used.

Although cosmetics do not have the ability to biostimulate collagen, they are also excellent allies in treatment. “Those with expression can be prevented and treated with botulinum toxin,” she points out.

How to prevent?

The doctor points out that, in addition to the use of botulinum toxin with a certain frequency, the daily application of sunscreens, hydration of the skin with cosmetics and a good water intake are essential factors in preventing the appearance of these changes.

“We can also start a collagen biostimulator around the age of 27. A visit to a doctor is essential to start a preventive protocol”, concludes the specialist.
