Lila Moss, the 23-year-old daughter of supermodel Kate Moss, has recreated the photograph that launched her mother's career in 1990, prompting a backlash from some young social media users who have called the shoot "cultural appropriation."

Kate Moss was a freckled, unknown teenager when she appeared on the cover of The Face magazine in 1990, photographed on a beach wearing a feathered headdress. The picture, taken by photographer Corinne Day, is widely credited with launching Moss's decades-long modelling career.

Now, 36 years on, Lila has posed for the cover of Perfect magazine wearing the very same headdress, in a shoot marking ten years of the Kate Moss Agency, the modelling agency founded by her mother.

While much of the fashion world has applauded the nostalgic tribute, some Gen Z commentators have objected to the headdress. "What indigenous tribe is she part of?" asked one social media user in their twenties. Another wrote: "Didn't we all learn about cultural appropriation?" A third said: "Please white people stop wearing sacred American headdresses! It is so disrespectful and gross. It's 2026."

Not the first controversy for Lila

This is not the first time Lila has found herself at the centre of criticism over cultural sensitivity. Nine years ago, at the age of 14, she wore her hair in cornrows for a shoot, a style some at the time deemed "problematic" given its significance within the Black community.

A source close to the model said Lila "finally feels she is stepping out of her mother's shadow," adding: "She is raking it in these days with all her brand deals."

Her latest campaigns include Versace's new fragrance, Crystal Emerald, which launched last week, and the French luxury label Zadig & Voltaire. Lila has spent the summer in Ibiza with friends and her mother, and has recently split from her boyfriend, e-commerce coordinator Yoni Helbitz. Perfect magazine and Lila Moss were approached for comment.
