Singer Lionel Richie has been admitted to an intensive care unit to undergo tests for dehydration. The 77 year old checked into a hospital over the weekend following an August 29 concert in St. Louis.
Richie sat down to perform his final song, "All Night Long." A video from the event showed the former American Idol judge asking his crew to move a seat onto the stage.
Entertainment news outlet TMZ cited sources with direct knowledge who said doctors were looking into slight dehydration. Representatives for Richie have not commented.
Richie previously cut a June concert short after feeling dizzy. He returned to the stage on June 30 and July 1 with the band Earth, Wind & Fire for their Sing a Song All Night Long Tour.
The singer mentioned the June incident during his St. Louis show. A reporter from The St. Louis American heard Richie tell the crowd he had experienced things on tour that shook him up.
"I couldn't figure out what the hell was going on," Richie said. "I went back to the doctor, and he said, 'You are suffering from dehydration.'"
A video captured by the local newspaper showed the Grammy winner drinking red electrolyte liquid on stage. "I'm telling you, this stuff is nasty, but it works," he said.
Richie has three children. He shares Nicole, 44, with his former girlfriend Karen Moss. He has two children with his former wife Diane Alexander: Miles, 32, and Sofia, 27.
The singer thanked fans on Instagram on July 4. "Thank you for every message, every kind word, and for all your love," Richie wrote. "I'm doing well, and I'm grateful for all of you."
Other celebrity health scares
Richie joins a long list of entertainers who have recently faced sudden medical issues. In May 2026, BFFs podcaster Brianna "Chickenfry" LaPaglia had emergency surgery for a large ovarian cyst.
The cyst twisted her organs and caused internal bleeding. "There was a half a liter of blood in my pelvic floor," LaPaglia said in a TikTok video. "I have five incisions all over my stomach. They went in through my belly button with a camera so they could find all the blood."
Former WWE wrestler Nikki Garcia suffered a shifted breast implant in July 2025. The Total Bellas star took an elbow slam from wrestler Piper Niven during a match.
"It's OK," Garcia told her sister Bella Garcia. "We're going to get it fixed one day. I told the doctor, I go, 'Newly divorced, so the minute the boots are hung up, I'm going to come back to you and we're going to make these girls look real good, because these girls are going to get some action in the future and that can't look like that.'"
Hidden diagnoses and sudden injuries
Actor Lupita Nyong'o revealed in 2025 that she had suffered from uterine fibroids for a decade. The noncancerous growths develop in or around the uterus. The 12 Years a Slave star was diagnosed in 2014, the year she won an Academy Award.
Nyong'o wrote on Instagram that she had been suffering in silence. "When we reach puberty, we're taught periods mean pain, and that pain is simply part of being a woman," she said. "We're struggling alone with something that affects us most."
Daisy Jones & The Six actor Suki Waterhouse was hospitalized with a hernia in July 2025. The condition causes a gap in the abdominal or groin muscles.
Waterhouse blamed tight clothing on the social media platform X. "Have you ever considered I wore pants so tight 6 months ago it caused a hernia & I’ve been too scared to tell you?" she wrote.
Beverly Hills, 90210 actor Brian Austin Green nearly suffered a burst appendix in April 2025. Green said in an Instagram video that he felt stomach pain before visiting the emergency room.
"I had a perforated appendix. Not quite burst, but just before," Green said. "I'm on the road to recovery. It's not an easy process. This is my first major surgery."
Medical emergencies on the field
Racing Louisville soccer player Savannah DeMelo collapsed during a September 14 match against the Seattle Reign in Seattle. The United States Women's National Team midfielder sat on the field before collapsing seconds later.
The National Women's Soccer League wrote on X that DeMelo received immediate care from trainers. "Savannah received immediate on-field care from medical personnel and was transported to a local hospital for further evaluation," the league said. "She is stable and alert."
Actor Adam Devine spoke in 2025 about lingering injuries from being hit by a cement truck at age 11. Devine told the In Depth With Graham Bensinger podcast that his body has things that are "a little wonky and a little wrong."
"It's been a nightmare," Devine said. "I have spasms all over. For a while, the doctors told me I was dying, literally, within this last year."
Bachelor Nation star Jason Tartick aggravated a back injury during a recreational vehicle trip with a friend. Tartick said on a March 2025 episode of his Trading Secrets podcast that he arrived at the hospital crawling on all fours.
"Right now, knees to my toes, it's, like, still tingly, which is crazy," Tartick said. He noted he had recently been able to squat 295 pounds but could no longer do a one legged squat without falling. Tartick said he was recovering with steroids and the help of a back specialist.
Heart attacks, accidents and immune conditions
Matt Kirschenheiter suffered a heart attack in March 2025 and survived. He is the former husband of Real Housewives of Orange County star Gina Kirschenheiter.
Actor Tracy Morgan was wheeled out of Madison Square Garden during a New York Knicks game in March 2025. The 30 Rock star updated fans on social media the next day, saying he had food poisoning and was recovering.
Even Stevens actor Christy Carlson Romano was shot in the face in February 2025. She was celebrating her husband Brendan Rooney's birthday by shooting clay pigeons.
"There was another party with us and they unsafely fired in the wrong direction and shot me in the face," Romano wrote on Instagram. She said her husband rushed her to the hospital. "I was hit in 5 places, one was less than an inch from hitting me directly in my right eye."
Romano said doctors left a fragment behind her eye because surgery was too risky, but her vision remained normal. "I saw my life flash before my eyes and I’m telling you, hug the people around you every chance you can," she said.
Comedian Amy Schumer was diagnosed with Cushing syndrome in early 2024. The Life & Beth creator learned about her condition after online commenters noticed her swollen face.
Blood clots and brain injuries
"The internet really came for me after doing a bunch of press, and I was like, 'OK everybody, relax,'" Schumer said on the Call Her Daddy podcast in January 2025. She realized doctors were leaving comments suggesting a medical issue.
Schumer realized the condition stemmed from steroid injections she received for surgical scars. She wrote in a February 2024 newsletter that she was relieved to find out her type of Cushing syndrome would resolve on its own.
American Hockey League player Casey Fitzgerald received 25 stitches in December 2024 after a skate blade cut his neck. His father, New Jersey Devils general manager Tom Fitzgerald, told ESPN that his son had fully recovered. "We're very lucky. I don't wish that on any parent," he said.
Model Hailey Bieber suffered a small blood clot in her brain in March 2022. She experienced stroke like symptoms while eating breakfast with her husband, singer Justin Bieber.
"Justin was like, 'Are you OK?' and I just didn't respond because I wasn't sure," Hailey Bieber said on YouTube. "The right side of my face started drooping. I couldn't get a sentence out."
Doctors at the University of California, Los Angeles, discovered a hole in her heart called a patent foramen ovale. The blood clot escaped through the hole and traveled to her brain, causing a transient ischemic attack. She later underwent a successful procedure to close the hole.
Paralysis, strokes and long recoveries
Justin Bieber was diagnosed with Ramsay Hunt syndrome in June 2022. The condition temporarily paralyzed parts of his face and forced him to cancel the rest of his Justice World Tour.
"It is from this virus that attacks the nerve in my ear and my facial nerves and has caused my face to have paralysis," he said in an Instagram video. "As you can see, this eye is not blinking. I can't smile on this side of my face. This nostril will not move."
Actor Jamie Foxx spent 20 days unconscious after suffering a brain bleed and stroke in April 2023. The Django Unchained star detailed the incident in a 2024 Netflix special.
"I was having such a bad headache, so I asked my boy, I said, 'Listen, I need an aspirin,'" Foxx said. "Before I could get the Aspirin, I went out. I don't remember 20 days."
A doctor gave Foxx a cortisone shot and sent him home, but his sister Deidra Dixon took him to a hospital. Foxx woke up in a wheelchair on May 4 before moving to Chicago for rehabilitation.
Reality television star Tracey Yukich collapsed from organ failure during a one mile run on NBC's The Biggest Loser. Yukich told the Fit for TV series that she had developed rhabdomyolysis.
"I remember hearing the helicopter. I just felt like I was floating," Yukich said. "And then I saw darkness. But then I saw light. So I knew, I knew I died that day."
Aneurysms and holistic treatments
Game of Thrones actor Emilia Clarke suffered two brain aneurysms. She wrote a 2019 essay in The New Yorker detailing a subarachnoid hemorrhage that caused shooting and stabbing pain.
"I reached the toilet, sank to my knees, and proceeded to be violently, voluminously ill," Clarke wrote. "At some level, I knew what was happening: my brain was damaged."
Clarke underwent immediate surgery and temporarily suffered from aphasia. A 2013 brain scan revealed a second growth that required a more invasive skull surgery.
"When they woke me, I was screaming in pain," Clarke wrote. "The procedure had failed. I had a massive bleed and the doctors made it plain that my chances of surviving were precarious if they didn’t operate again." She said she has since fully recovered.
Cori Broadus, daughter of rapper Snoop Dogg, suffered a severe stroke in January 2024. Broadus told E! News that her recovery was complicated by lupus and failing kidneys.
"I texted them that I just had a stroke and sent them a picture," Broadus said in December 2024. "Everybody just came to my rescue." She said she was recovering well and working on her motor skills.
Actor Shailene Woodley struggled with an undiagnosed condition in her early twenties that caused hearing loss and severe stomach pain. She told the SHE MD Podcast in September 2024 that she could not walk for more than five minutes without resting.
"It was this conflation of issues and diagnoses and different doctors telling me different things," Woodley said. She sought help from medical doctors and independent healers, and said the physical discomfort led to body dysmorphia and mental confusion over a ten year period. The condition has since resolved.
