The infamous 1993 criminal case of Lorena Bobbitt is set to be adapted into a new miniseries at Hulu as part of the true-crime anthology series Good American Family. Executive producer Ellen Pompeo, best known for her long-running starring role in the television drama series Grey's Anatomy, is revisiting the headline-making Virginia incident and the high-profile court trials that followed, Deadline reported Wednesday.
The project follows the successful first season of Good American Family, which focused on Natalia Grace, a Ukrainian-born girl with dwarfism who was adopted by an American family and abandoned three years later amid allegations that she was an adult.
According to Variety, the limited anthology series is inspired by the story of Lorena and John Bobbitt, describing them as a Virginia couple who incited a media circus that treated trauma as entertainment, launched a thousand dirty jokes, and ignited a gender war. Representatives for Pompeo were contacted by the Daily Mail for comment but did not immediately respond.
The 1993 incident and court trials
The case began in June 1993 when Lorena Bobbitt severed her husband John's penis with a knife at their home in Virginia before driving away and dumping it in a field. The couple had been married since 1989. Law enforcement officers recovered the severed organ, and surgeons successfully reattached it during a nine-hour medical operation.
Following the attack, Lorena claimed that her husband had subjected her to years of rape and physical abuse, maintaining that she acted strictly in self-defense. John Bobbitt denied all allegations of domestic violence.
Both individuals faced criminal prosecution in separate court proceedings. In November 1993, a jury acquitted John Bobbitt of marital sexual assault and rape. In 1994, Lorena was tried for malicious wounding, but the jury found her not guilty by reason of insanity. She subsequently completed a mandatory 45-day stay in a Virginia psychiatric facility before being released. The couple finalized their divorce in 1995.
Behind the production team
The new season is being created by the producers of Good American Family. Executive producer Ellen Pompeo signed on to help lead the second installment after both producing and starring in the initial season of the anthology program. Hulu, a major American subscription streaming service, will broadcast the upcoming series.
Previous screen portrayals and current lives
The Bobbitt case has been the subject of multiple screen adaptations over the decades. In 2019, Amazon Prime Video released Lorena, a four-part documentary series produced by filmmaker Jordan Peele in which Lorena shared her personal account of events. In 2020, the Lifetime network aired the television movie I Was Lorena Bobbitt, starring Dani Montalvo as Lorena and Luke Humphrey as John, with narration provided by Lorena herself.
In the years after the trials, John Bobbitt capitalized on his media notoriety by starring in two adult films, released in 1994 and 1996. Now 59 years old, he currently resides in Florida, a state in the southeastern United States.
Lorena, now 57 years old, has reverted to using her birth name, Lorena Gallo. In 2018, she established the Lorena Gallo Foundation, an organization dedicated to expanding domestic violence and sexual assault prevention education, providing emergency response resources, and organizing community engagement activities to assist survivors and their children. She lives in Washington, D.C., the capital of the United States, alongside her partner and their daughter.
