Hormonal imbalance is the primary cause of sudden male breast enlargement, according to endocrinologist Vladimir Majorov and plastic surgeon Alexandra Frolova from the Semeynaya clinic network.
Speaking to news outlet Lenta.ru, the medical specialists explained why complaints regarding male breast growth, medically known as gynecomastia, have increased in recent years. Gynecomastia is a medical condition characterized by the swelling of breast gland tissue in men and boys, caused by an imbalance between the hormones estrogen and testosterone.

Majorov stated that the central trigger for sudden breast tissue expansion in men is a shift in hormone production, where levels of the male sex hormone testosterone decline while levels of the female sex hormone estrogen rise. Testosterone drives male physical characteristics and muscle development, whereas estrogen regulates bone health and other functions. When estrogen levels rise relative to testosterone, it stimulates glandular chest tissue to expand.
Medical Conditions and Lifestyle Triggers
A range of underlying medical conditions can trigger gynecomastia, Majorov warned. These include chronic kidney disease, liver cirrhosis, hyperthyroidism, and tumors affecting the testicles, pituitary gland, or adrenal glands. The liver and kidneys process and filter hormones from the bloodstream, while the thyroid, pituitary, and adrenal glands form key parts of the endocrine system that regulate hormone balance.
Lifestyle choices also contribute significantly to the problem. Majorov highlighted alcohol abuse, particularly regular beer consumption, as a primary cause because beer contains plant-derived compounds known as phytoestrogens. In addition, chronic stress negatively affects the endocrine glands, impairing their ability to maintain stable hormone levels.
The broader risks of alcohol consumption to male reproductive health were also highlighted in a previous warning by narcologist Rafael Khakimzanov. He cautioned that even moderate, regular alcohol intake can cause DNA damage in male germ cells and trigger structural abnormalities in sperm cells.
Medications and Steroid Abuse
Prescription drugs are another major factor in male breast tissue growth, according to Frolova. Medication triggers include pharmaceutical treatments for cardiovascular diseases, antibiotics, antifungal drugs, and certain psychotropic medications used for psychiatric conditions.
Frolova noted that anabolic steroids represent one of the most common causes of rapid breast growth among athletes. Anabolic steroids are synthetic substances designed to mimic testosterone to enhance muscle mass and athletic performance. When athletes artificially increase their testosterone levels with steroids, the body attempts to compensate by preemptively raising its estrogen production, resulting in rapid gynecomastia.
Warning Signs and Medical Advice
Both medical experts emphasized that men must consult a specialist immediately if chest enlargement occurs rapidly. Crucial symptoms requiring urgent medical attention include localized pain, swelling, firm lumps or tissue hardening, fluid discharging from the breast area, or skin redness over the chest.
