Greek shipping heiress Marianna Kouloukountis has published a personal tribute in New York following the death of American feminist leader Gloria Marie Steinem.
Kouloukountis, who lives and works in New York City, shared her memories on her personal social media account several days after the activist passed away.
She recalled a chance meeting with Steinem that took place at a bar on the evening of her 40th birthday. Members of her group had approached the bar where Steinem was sitting, and their conversation revealed to the pioneer activist that it was Kouloukountis's birthday.
Minutes later, Steinem turned toward her, raised a glass of champagne, and told her that turning 40 was when life actually begins. Kouloukountis noted that she could not have imagined a more blessed birthday wish.
Legacy of the feminist movement
Steinem was recognized by the United States government as a key leader of the American feminist movement during the late 1960s and early 1970s. As a pioneering social activist, journalist, and magazine founder, she spent decades campaigning for equal rights, gender equality, and female empowerment.
Kouloukountis descends from a prominent Greek shipping family with a long maritime heritage. In addition to commercial shipping operations, numerous members of the family have historically maintained active involvement in the arts and cultural endeavours.

While many individuals are fortunate enough to take these rights for granted, she stressed that vast numbers of women still lack them. That ongoing disparity, she explained, makes the foundation laid by Steinem and her peers remarkably important in contemporary society.
