The song "10 de Setembro" (September 10), part of the "Festa das Patroas" project by Brazilian singer Marília Mendonça and the duo Maiara & Maraisa, was once again celebrated on social media on September 10, a date fans have come to treat as a fixture on the sertanejo music calendar.
Followers of the track, which all three singers recorded together, used the day to revisit the music video for the song, released in 2020, along with clips from concerts in which Maiara & Maraisa paid tribute to their friend and collaborator, who died in 2021.
Who wrote the song
"10 de Setembro" was written by Marília Mendonça, Maraisa, Juliano Tchula and Elcio di Carvalho. The lyrics describe someone calling to wish a happy birthday to a person born on September 10, expressing sadness at being apart and at not being able to carry out plans the two had made together for that day.
Marília Mendonça, known in Brazil as the "Rainha da Sofrência" (Queen of Heartbreak) for her string of hit ballads about heartbreak, died in a plane crash in 2021. She was one of the best-selling sertanejo artists in Brazil before her death. Maiara & Maraisa are a twin-sister duo who built much of their career performing alongside her.
Maraisa on their friendship
In an earlier interview with CNN Brasil, Maiara & Maraisa spoke about what their friend meant to their careers. Maraisa said they felt Marília was still close by, watching over them, and that what had changed was their determination to carry on for her, for themselves and for everything she had achieved. She said it was impossible to forget her but that they continued with the mission of honoring her legacy.
Years of collaboration
Maiara & Maraisa partnered with Marília Mendonça on four projects: "Agora Que São Elas" in 2016, "Agora Que São Elas 2" in 2018, "Festa das Patroas" in 2020 and "Festa das Patroas 35%" in 2021, the last of which included Marília's final releases before her death.
