A new matchstick puzzle published by Ukrainian news outlet UNIAN challenges readers to fix the false math equation 7 + 5 + 3 = 5 in five seconds.
The visual logic test presents an incorrect mathematical sum formed from individual matchsticks, requiring solvers to relocate a single stick to make the equation correct.
According to UNIAN, the primary difficulty of the puzzle stems from the strict five-second time limit. The publisher noted that the task is designed to test mental speed, attention to detail, and out-of-the-box thinking under time pressure.
The secret to solving the puzzle lies in modifying two separate digits within the statement. Solvers must remove one matchstick from the initial number seven, transforming it into a number one. That removed matchstick must then be repositioned onto the final number five, turning it into a number nine. The single movement corrects the mathematical statement to read 1 + 5 + 3 = 9.

Despite the tight five-second deadline, UNIAN advised readers not to become distressed or doubt their cognitive abilities if they fail to find the answer on their first attempt. The agency emphasized that the main purpose of such exercises is to train the brain and relieve mental stress rather than achieving immediate success.
Solving logic challenges and social sharing
UNIAN encouraged participants to share the visual quiz with friends across social media platforms to test their observation skills and see who can identify the solution in the shortest time.
Matchstick puzzles have long served as popular brain teasers in recreational mathematics. By representing Arabic numerals through segmented matchstick lines, these puzzles require solvers to visualize geometric shifts and digit transformations. News outlets and online media platforms frequently publish them as engaging visual tests that provide brief mental breaks for readers.
The latest challenge is part of an ongoing series of mathematical logic tests hosted by UNIAN. In an earlier puzzle published by the agency, solvers were asked to relocate a single misplaced matchstick to correct the flawed subtraction equation 7 - 3 = 2.
In another recent brain teaser from the publication featuring the expression 4 + 8 = 18, two matchsticks were placed incorrectly. Solvers were similarly granted a five-second time window to adjust both matchsticks and demonstrate a high level of cleverness.
