Love Island winners Molly Smith and Tom Clare have revealed the hilarious mishaps that occurred during their wedding in Mallorca last month.
The couple, who met on the spin-off series Love Island: All Stars in South Africa, tied the knot on the picturesque Spanish island in a lavish ceremony surrounded by family and friends. While they admitted the big day was everything they expected it to be and more, they were also met with unpredictable events during the festivities.
Molly Smith and Tom Clare first rose to fame on ITV2's popular dating reality show Love Island, where single contestants live in a luxury villa while attempting to find romance. Smith previously appeared on Season 6 of the show in 2020, while Clare, a former professional footballer who played as a striker for Macclesfield FC, featured on Season 9 in 2023. The pair reunited on the inaugural spin-off series Love Island: All Stars in early 2024, ultimately winning the competition after coupling up in South Africa.
Speaking exclusively to the Daily Mail, Tom Clare confessed that his biggest regret from the wedding morning involved his formal attire. He admitted that trying to tie a self-made bow tie caused unexpected chaos before the ceremony.
"The one thing I would change is I would have got not a self-made bow tie," Clare explained. "That's the only thing because they're impossible to do."
Molly Smith chimed in to recall how her groom struggled with online tutorials on the morning of the wedding. "You couldn't do it the morning of," Smith said. "You was like trying to watch YouTube and it weren't working."
Clare laughed off the situation, noting that everyone present tried to assist him with the neckwear dilemma. However, the wedding crew soon had to inform the bride about the wardrobe delay.
"Yeah, the photographer and videography came back into my room and was like, 'there's a slight problem. Tom's got no bowtie,'" Smith recalled. "I was like, 'great.'" Despite the morning scramble, Clare added: "But we had a good laugh and I wouldn't change it."
Mallorca wedding reception and police intervention
Following their wedding vows, the couple hosted a lively party at the Suculenta Port de Sóller restaurant in Mallorca. Port de Sóller is a coastal village situated in a large horseshoe bay on the north-west coast of Mallorca, famous for its marina, mountain views, and waterfront dining.
A slew of friends, family, and Love Island co-stars gathered for the celebration, but the post-wedding meal ended in chaos when police were called during day two of the rowdy festivities.
Rumours quickly circulated that best man Casey O'Gorman had been arrested during the commotion, but Clare set the record straight and confirmed that no arrest took place. "I kind of wish it was something like that, that would have made it better," Clare joked.
The reality television star explained that the incident began when guests went swimming in the Mediterranean Sea. "Basically, we all just jumped in the sea where there were no signs that we couldn't jump in the sea," Clare said. "And so we were all just jumping in the sea then the local guard gave us a little tap on the wrists and that was it."
The celebrations did not stop there, as the newlyweds and their reality television guests decided to commemorate the trip by getting matching tattoos. Smith began searching for local studios while relaxing on the beach.
"I was Googling tattoo parlours in Mallorca because we had already said that we were going to get tattoos, but we were going to do it when we came home, which we did," Smith said. "But whilst we were there, we were at the beach and I was like googling it, I was like, oh, this one literally like 15 minutes away."
After enjoying a few drinks, the group agreed on a permanent souvenir. "We were a few tequila deep at that point," Smith admitted. "Yeah, and then next minute, we were all decided that we were all going to get a matching tequila shot. I don't know how it snowballed into that either." The group ended up getting matching tequila shot tattoos etched onto their ankles.
Flight delays on Turkish mini-moon
After returning to the United Kingdom, Smith and Clare prepared to depart for their mini-moon in Bodrum, Turkey. Bodrum is a historic resort town located on the Aegean coast of southwestern Turkey, known for its beaches, luxury resorts, and Mediterranean climate.
However, their getaway suffered immediate disruption due to widespread flight cancellations. "We had trouble going out because we were due to fly out on the Tuesday and that's all the air traffic," Smith explained. "All the fights were stopped."
Clare described the frustrating ordeal at the airport as their initial flight was grounded. "Yeah. Oh, it was tragic," Clare said. "We sat on the fight for like, how long? Three hours. And then got it got cancelled. We got sent home. And then we ended up trying to rebook the flight, having to fly from Leeds." Leeds Bradford Airport served as their alternative departure point to reach Turkey.
Once they reached Bodrum, the couple spent their holiday unwinding after a busy summer. "But we got there and it was exactly what we just wanted; something super chilled, relaxed because every holiday we've been on this year has been like, obviously the wedding, we had dinners and parties and like all events and stuff," Smith said. "So it was nice and literally just switch off. All we did was play Yatzy and Uno."
Future plans and South Africa honeymoon
Looking ahead, the couple are planning to take their main honeymoon early next year in South Africa. The trip will include a wildlife safari, which was gifted to them by Smith's parents.
"Yeah, so basically, Molly's parents actually got us a safari in South Africa," Clare shared. "Which is something we got as a wedding present. I think maybe the start of next year when the season's a bit better. We're going to definitely look. I think that's going to be our main only moon next."
In addition to planning their safari trip, the newlyweds are currently in the process of moving into a new house, which they intend to make their permanent family home.
"I think we wanted just move into our house, we want to settle, we want it's been a very busy year," Smith said when asked about their upcoming plans. "It's been a lot of like, go, go, go. So to actually just like, take a step back and relax."
Clare agreed with his wife, emphasizing that they want to achieve several personal goals before starting a family. "We're going to be a little bit more selfish as well," Clare said. "I've got a few more trips and.. Yeah, like, we want to do the last few bucket list moment like, the safari and things like that before any babies. We will definitely be talking about the family in the future, but yeah, we're just not in any rush."
