When it rains, it pours.
ohspoilers from the first part of the fourth season of ‘You’, below!
In ‘You’ they are more obsessed with sex than it seems.
In large part we say this because of the obsessive tendencies that Joe has been showing in the last four seasons of the series. However, there is something hidden beyond simple desire. There is a controlling element, deeply disturbing, that the series is not afraid to explore, in other softer or less “bloody” ways.
Thus, fans may have been surprised by something that happens with Adam at the beginning of the second episode of season 4. Played by the actor we met on ‘The White Lotus’, Lukas Gage, this insufferable American socialite is hiding a secret. One that Joe stumbles upon by accident (of course).
With goggles securely in place, Adam kneels in front of a member of the service while he is drenched with his urine. “Pee me,” Adam tells her (couldn’t be more clear). We can even see the impact of the liquid on his face. So yes, it seems that Adam likes to play.
so written, this seems like a deliberate attempt to shock the audience. Something created by the writers to make us talk (mind you, it worked!). There is no doubt that seeing a guy being pissed on is shocking, even if the actor in question had already gone viral for starring in an intense sex scene in ‘The White Lotus’.
But, as in the other case, the unusual sex scene plays a much bigger role than you might think (narratively speaking).
Speaking to Lukas Gage about the sequence, the ‘You’ actor exclusively told Digital Spy that it is important for the project to be “very very honest“in all its aspects, including the sexuality and fluidity of a character like Adam:
“I always like to explore what is not seen in the characters and what they hide from others. What has gotten you to that point where you feel like you can’t show people who you really are and where that comes from?“
Adam is not an amazing man. He treats people badly, including Phoebe, and while his insecurities aren’t a justification for his behavior, It’s interesting to see a character so sure of himself, hide this desire from everyone. — especially his girlfriend, who we think he could trust.
In the fifth episode, Phoebe discovers Adam’s fetish but instead of getting angry or embarrassed, she tries to find common ground and satisfy him however he likes.
However, Adam doesn’t seem too up for the job. At this moment, the young man confesses the reason why he has never tried golden showers with her. What he enjoys is the imbalance of power that the particular act entails.. He doesn’t see himself “above” Phoebe, so she doesn’t find it pleasurable when he pees on her.
Quite revealing. Adam is not the only one in this circle to look down on those less privileged, but Few indulge in that superiority the way he does.. His behavior explains, to a large extent, Adam’s decisions in the second part, but we can’t get into that yet.
What we can know is what this means for Phoebe. “I was ready to piss in your face and show you that I love you,” she tells Adam, when he rejects her. That is important and this is how the actress Tilly Keeper recognized it for Digital Spy:
“It’s written as some kind of comedic moment in the series, but it’s actually a pivotal point for their relationship. It shows how much Phoebe wants to be loved the way she deserves and how far she’s willing to go to get it. I don’t think he’s acting out of insecurity or desperation. I think she wants to validate Adam too.”
The latter is really important. Despite all of her flaws, Phoebe cares for Adam in a way that most of the group couldn’t. Not caring how she treats him. Phoebe doesn’t want him to be ashamed of his sexual desires.no matter how unusual they may seem to the rest.
“there is no judgement,” Added Keeper. “Because there shouldn’t be. Phoebe is playful. She has explored. It’s not unreasonable to think that Phoebe might be attracted to doing it.. However, Lukas and I were not joking about it at all. We had to get turned on one way or another.”
Even though the golden shower scenes are comical in nature, It is true that the series does not make fun of Adam for his fetish, nor does it condemn him. Something difficult to find, as far as film and television are concerned.
‘American Pie 2’ included an accidental golden shower that caught Stifler by surprise. Another moment that instantly comes to mind is the third season episode of ‘Sex and the City’, in which Carrie is horrified by one of her lovers’ pee fetish.
Trying to get over his rejection, Carrie tells Roger that the most she’ll do is sprinkle warm tea over him or leave the tap running while they go to bed.. Roger responds by making fun of her work as a sex columnist and she, in revenge, publishes a (rather inconspicuous) article about men being ashamed of her desires.
Roger’s rudeness aside, ‘Sex and the City’ Wasn’t As “Modern” It Claimed To Be. Since then, other references to golden showers have decided to focus on the “shock” they bring and not everything else. Think about the beginning of ‘Billions’ or when Nicole Kidman urinated on Zac Efron in ‘The Paperboy’.
There’s a lot to criticize when it comes to ‘You’. And yes, there are certain elements that “rare” the moment. But by exploring it further and bringing him closer to what this means for his relationship with Phoebe, the series justifies its inclusion and does not leave it as a simple sporadic and meaningless event. (Something that could perfectly happen in ‘You’, taking into account its history).
All four seasons of ‘You’ are available on Netflix. The second part of season 4 premieres on March 9.
