Steven Spielberg thanks Tom Cruise for “saving Hollywood’s ass”

Tom Cruise and Steven Spielberg They met again at the Oscar 2023 nominees luncheon and they melted into a hug. The actor saved the planet in the film in which they worked together, ‘The War of the Worlds’, but now Spielberg thanked him for having saved another equally (or more) important thing: movie theaters.

A video shared on Instagram by the director Kartiki Gonsalveswhose film ‘Our Baby Elephant’ is nominated for Best Documentary Short, showed Spielberg and Cruise entwined in an embrace, with the filmmaker telling the actor “you saved hollywood’s ass and you could have saved film distribution. Oh really, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ could have saved the entire movie industry”.

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ was the second film to break the barrier of 1,000 million dollars after the pandemic (The first was ‘Spider-Man: No Way Home’), and it was placed in fifth place among the highest grossing films in history if we take into account only what was collected in the US.

For Paramount, its distributor, the key to its success was the people who saw the film more than once in theaters. By its fourth weekend in North American theaters, 16% of the audience had rewatched the film at least once, and 4% had seen it three or more times.

Steven Spielberg’s new film, ‘The Fabelmans’has just been released in Spanish theaters and is one of the favorites for the Oscars with 7 nominations among which are Best Picture and Best Director. ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ starring and produced by Tom Cruise, accumulates 6 nominations in categories such as Best Film and Best Adapted Screenplay. Therefore, Spielberg and Cruise will be “rivals” at the next gala on March 12.
