The tree, this mysterious and unrecognizable plant, has often occupied a prominent place in fantasy cinema.
For example, in Peter Jackson’s Lord of the Rings trilogy, we were able to meet Treebeard, the guardian of Fangorn Forest. A humanoid tree gifted with speech, a member of the Ent race, who will play a key role in his decision to go to war against Saruman when he discovers that a wizard has destroyed his forest.
Another humanoid tree, the no less famous Marvel Cinematic Universe Groot, a member of Star-Lord’s crew, first appeared in Guardians of the Galaxy. A beloved character we thought for a moment we’d never see again when he sacrifices himself by creating a shield to protect his friends at the end of the first film. Fortunately, his final scene introduces Baby Groot, a cut of the original Groot, who will become a central character in the second installment.
Horror cinema was also able to distinguish trees in individual scenes, which became iconic in the genre. One might think of Sam Raimi’s first Evil Dead, in which a young woman emerges from her cabin into a night-clouded forest and then clings to tree branches possessed by an evil spirit.
Another example is with Tobe Hooper’s Poltergeist, in which a garden tree enters little Rob’s room through the window, then begins to devour him, until his family comes to his aid and finally manages to save him.
Not all trees are equally scary in movies. Here are seven of them that I recommend you identify with this 100% veggie quiz.
