When you’re told that a Tetris movie is on the way, what do you think? No, it’s not one pixels–style, literal blocks falling from the sky adaptation of the game, but a dramatization of the quest to secure the rights to the game, led by black bird AND rocket starring Taron Egerton. He plays Henk Rogers, a Dutch businessman particularly fascinated by Tetris and eager to grab international distribution rights, but meets resistance from Soviet authorities, KGB agents and the game’s inventor, Alex Pajitnov (Nikita Yefremov). The movie is out on Apple TV+ and the first trailer just dropped. Have a watch below.
The Soviets aren’t the only ones standing in Henk’s way, as British media mogul Robert Maxwell (Roger Allam) and his brat son Kevin (Anthony Boyle), as well as Nintendo big boss Hiroshi Yamauchi (Togo Igawa), also I’m ready to claim something. in what Rogers describes as “poetry, art and mathematics work in perfect sync”. It’s all based on the true story of the game’s rise to iconic status, with all these deals coming to fruition at a particularly tense time between East and West governments and corporations. While Tetris itself was exceptionally simple, fighting for its rights certainly wasn’t.
