Heart disease, stroke, lung infections and neonatal conditions are among the leading causes of death from disease worldwide, according to a WHO survey.
heart problems, Cerebral vascular accident (CVA), diabetes and lung cancer are among the 10 deadliest diseases in the world, according to a survey by the World Health Organization (WHO). Leading the list of deadly diseases is myocardial ischemia. Heart disease alone causes 9 million deaths each year.

- Stroke is the leading cause of death in Brazil, according to a preliminary survey
It is worth noting here that the diseases that cause the most deaths in the world are not necessarily the deadliest. This is because the WHO analysis only considers total numbers. If the idea were to indicate the diseases with the highest mortality rate, it would be necessary to consider the number of people who get sick and the number of deaths.
What are the top 10 deadliest diseases in the world?
Below, check out the WHO survey that estimates which diseases caused the most deaths in the world, between the years 2000 and 2019, in descending order:
- Ischemic heart disease, also known as myocardial ischemia: responsible for 16% of all deaths worldwide, or about 9 million deaths per year;
- Cerebral vascular accident (CVA), also known as a stroke: causes more than 6 million deaths (11%);
- Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD): is responsible for about 3 million deaths (6%);
- Lower respiratory tract infections such as pneumonia: cause more than 2.5 million deaths;
- Neonatal conditions such as baby asphyxia and other types of birth trauma: cause more than 2 million deaths among infants and young children;
- Tracheal, bronchial and lung cancers: responsible for the deaths of more than 1.8 million people — other cancers are not included in this sum;
- Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia: they are responsible for more than 1.5 million deaths, disproportionately affecting women: they are 65% of fatal victims;
- Diarrhea: causes more than 1.5 million deaths;
- Diabetes: causes more than 1.5 million deaths;
- Kidney disease or failure: causes more than 1.5 million deaths.
It should be noted that, since the survey is not annual and therefore does not include covid-19, discovered only in the last month of 2019. Depending on the evolution of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, it is possible that the infection occupies some position in the WHO ranking. Based on consolidated data from the first two years of the pandemic — before the dissemination of vaccines – the disease would certainly be of high rank.
Fun facts about these diseases, according to WHO
An important note about the latest WHO survey is that ischemic heart disease remained the leading cause of global death for 20 years. It’s long enough to imagine that science would have learned to better deal with the cardiovascular condition, but reality indicates otherwise: the condition is killing more and more people. Including, the number of deaths from heart disease rose from more than 2 million in 2000 to nearly 9 million in 2019.
While the numbers of some diseases have intensified in recent years, those of other diseases have declined dramatically. This is what happened with AIDS – a disease that occurs when the HIV virus is not controlled – since, in 2000, it occupied the eighth position in the WHO ranking and, in 2019, it is 19th . The explanation is, most likely, in greater access to medicines.
Another disease that had a similar behavior was tuberculosis. If in 200 it was the seventh most common cause of death from disease, in 2019 it was in the thirteenth. However, in some regions, the condition is still quite serious, such as in Africa, where it is the eighth leading cause of death. Again, the problem appears to be access to the right medications.
