Matt Sorum, who was the band’s drummer for most of the 1990s, revealed in an interview that the lead singer of Guns N’ Roses was not in favor of the initiative
In the early 1990s, guitarist slash started a partnership that had a lot of repercussions with the singer Michael Jackson. The member of Armas e Rosas not only recorded songs like “give in to me” alongside the king of pop as well as performing with him live.
Interestingly, the vocalist Axl Rose didn’t like this collaboration at all. At least that’s what the drummer says Matt Sorumwho addressed the issue in an interview with desert sun.
According to Sorumwhich could have been seen by rose as a way to amplify the audience of the Armas e Rosas actually sounded like an attempt to jackson to cash in on his band’s success. Even considering that at that time Michael was already one of the greatest pop artists of all time, axl did not receive the partnership well.
Another point of controversy, according to the drummer, was the involvement of a member of the band with a solo initiative. The singer wanted all members to be fully focused on the group.
“He [Axl] I didn’t like guys going around recording solo projects. He wanted everyone to be focused on the Armas e Rosas.”
Was Axl Rose right?
Even during the interview, Matt Sorum recognized that there was sense in the thought of Axl Rose. The former drummer of Armas e Rosas mentioned that musicians from other big bands, like metallica and the U2never got involved in side projects.
“If you look at the trajectory of the metallica, the members never made solo albums. The musicians of U2 they also never recorded solo albums. You Rolling Stones they even did, but they never did well in these initiatives, then they went back to being the stones.”
Curiously, slash and the bassist Duff McKagan even put together solo projects while they were in Armas e Rosasin the mid-1990s. The guitarist released an album with Slash’s Snakepit, It’s Five O’Clock Somewhere (1995), before leaving the group. The bassist has released the solo album believe in me (1993), also prior to his break with training.
Slash and Michael Jackson
In a 2020 interview with Kerrang!, slash told us a little about his partnership with Michael Jackson. The guitarist said that he received the invitation through his manager and had a lot of freedom when making his first collaboration, in the song “give in to me”.
“I did what I usually do, he really enjoyed it and then he asked me if I would like to do some other things. I would play a few shows here and there. It was fun because he was so professional, a huge talent, top notch. That was the main thing: he was musically fluid. Onstage, he was very professional. When he wasn’t working, or producing or whatever, that’s when you saw how he was at the mercy of his own success. There were a lot of people, a lot of sycophants and a lot of people who just said ‘yes’ to him.”
