For much of this year’s awards speech, The Banshees of Inisherin AND All everywhere at once dominated in the main categories, but at the 2023 BAFTAs it was Quiet on the west facade who cleaned up Edward Berger’s film won seven awards in the evening, including Best Film, building momentum during the show by winning several technical categories (cinematography, music, sound) and major awards (director, adapted screenplay, film not in English) on the course of the ceremony.
“For a German-language film, we have been blessed with so many nominations, and to win this one is just fantastic,” producer Malte Grunert said on stage as he chose the best film. The film’s big victories were also loaded with the importance of its WW1 story. After winning the adapted screenplay, writer-director Berger noted that in five days it would have been a year since the start of the war in Ukraine, stating, “There are no heroes in any war.”
While Banshees lost director and best film, but still won four trophies on the night, including best British film (“I know all the Irish cast and crew who say, ‘Best What price? joked writer-director Martin McDonagh), original screenplay, plus supporting actor for Barry Keoghan and supporting actress for Kerry Condon. She has also won four awards Elvismostly in the technical categories (costumes, hair and makeup, cast), but also won Best Actor for Austin Butler, who beat out Colin Farrell, Brendan Fraser and Paul Mescal in a narrow selection.
It should therefore be noted that he is gone everywhere with only one victory in the evening, for Edizione. after the sun won Best Debut for its director Charlotte Wells, Cate Blanchett won Best Actress for TAR (in front of Michelle Yeoh and Viola Davis), Pinocchio by Guillermo del Toro came out with the animated film, and Navalni Moved to Documentary category. Farther, Avatar: the path of water won visual effects because… well, did you see it?
all of this, and Babylon trapped production design, Sex education star Emma Mackey took first place for the audience-voted EE Rising Star Award, an Irish goodbye won the British Short Film, and The boy, the mole, the fox and the horse I have an animated short. Oh, and Alison Hammond asked Ariana DeBose the immortal question, “Is there a limit to your talent, girls?” All in all, a successful evening.
