AirTag stalking ends relationship in Australia

AirTags were used to chase a woman traveling by car in the city of Melbourne, Australia

Since they were launched, AirTags have been used by criminals for persecution, which has also generated several actions by apple to try to inhibit the misuse of the tracking accessory. The most recent case occurred in Melbourne, Australia with a 19-year-old woman.

The victim, who has not been identified, said she received alerts on her cell phone as soon as the device identified the presence of an unknown AirTag:

“I was shopping during the day and kept getting notifications, but I had no idea where they were coming from.”

She also stated that she was very nervous during these moments, but even so she started looking for the tracker in her car, without success at this first moment.

Other than herself, the only person with access to the vehicle was her boyfriend at the time, with whom she later got in touch. She initially denied hacking into an AirTag, but she admitted after the woman said she would call the police.

She stressed that she felt “extremely violated” and was in shock. Meanwhile, her boyfriend said he “had been hurt in the past and didn’t want to risk going through it again.”

As it turned out, the AirTag was on one of the car’s hubcaps. The victim did not file a formal complaint, but at the same time ended the relationship.

This isn’t the first time AirTags have been involved in safety issues in Australia. In 2021 the product even left the shops of a local retailer, due to the choking hazard it posed.

AirTags cannot be used for stalking

While this specific situation has not passed through the local authorities, many previous cases have already resulted in police intervention and subsequent arrests.

Apple has already implemented several security measures to prevent this type of situation from happening. With the Buscar application it is possible to identify an AirTag and receive some initial information about the device.

The same app also shows instructions for turning off the tracker by opening the back cover and removing the battery.

In any case, anyone who does not feel safe can call the authorities. Some security units already have specific procedures for stalking with such gadgets, and therefore will offer the best alternatives against a stalker.
