Breakfast items have increased by 5.79% in recent months in the country
The classic breakfast, so traditional for Brazilians, is more expensive. And it’s the fault of the high ingredients that make up what should be the main meal of the day.
According to a survey conducted by Hibou, with 1,800 respondents aged between 16 and 75 nationwide and who eat at least one meal away from home between Monday and Friday, it emerged that 35% of respondents agree that breakfast should be a good meal, but today they don’t consider it ideal.
In fact, 6 out of 10 Brazilians eat breakfast on the road and right now black coffee is the choice of those interviewed. In São Paulo, coffee has grown by 14% and the transfer to the final consumer has also arrived: traditional pure coffee can vary in the capital from R$ 4.00 to R$ 8.50.
In Rio de Janeiro, milk increased by 36%, in Vitória-ES the price of eggs increased by 28%, cheese by 32% and cake by 29%, according to IBGE data. Even the traditional cheese bread has not escaped, with a 24% increase in Minas Gerais. Fortaleza increased the price of French bread by 17% and Recife that of butter by 29.1%.
Higher prices even abroad
“The increase in the ingredients that make up breakfast has a direct relationship with the change in exchange rates and the increase in international prices,” said Fábio Pizzamiglio, director of Efficienza, a company specializing in foreign trade.
“This goes beyond agricultural products and includes fertilizers and the logistical cost of operations. Furthermore, the scarcity of some products, such as milk and eggs, abroad, has contributed to the increase in prices throughout the country,” he added.
By comparison, in some capitals, the price of traditional bread with egg and coffee with milk can vary by up to 70%. Egg bread in São Paulo can range from R$ 6.80 to R$ 12, a difference of 76.47%. In Rio de Janeiro, the same bread with egg can be found for R$ 6.90 to R$ 16, a difference of 131%. The minimum price found was R$ 3.50 and the maximum was R$ 9.80. The second largest change was also in the price of bread on a plate: 177%. For this item, the lowest price identified was BRL 3.25 and the highest was BRL 9.
The variant of espresso coffee
Espresso, in Rio, had a 60% variation. In the cheapest place it was found at R$ 5, while in the most expensive one at R$ 8, i.e. the saving is R$ 3 for each coffee. In São Paulo, espresso had a variation of 122%. In the cheapest place it was found at R$ 4.50, while in the most expensive one at R$ 10, i.e. the saving is R$ 5.50 for each coffee.
“We need to be aware of international prices and how the lack of international supply has a direct impact on the price of our products. It is worth pointing out that we have observed a downward trend in the dollar which could, over the medium term, reduce values across the country. However, all of this still depends on the law of supply and demand. In this case it is important that families are aware of the impact of price changes on their family budgets”, concluded Pizzamiglio.
