If you were expecting to see Russell Crowe and the Colosseum in the same plane since he fought there Gladiatorwe have good news: he is back in the vicinity of his old land in The Pope’s Exorcist. In almost every way, though, it’s something else: a truth-based (well, sort of) horror story in which Crowe plays Father Gabriele Amorth (! You guessed it!) the longtime exorcist . If that name sounds familiar to you, it’s because it was the subject of William Friedkin’s documentary. The Devil and Father Amorth in 2017. Although, as you’ll see in the trailer below, that could be wrong The spell side of the veracity of the facts.
The Pope’s Exorcist marks the return of director Julius Avery, previously responsible for the D-Day zombie scare Gentleman, and again here balances historical settings with supernatural horror, as Father Amorth grapples with the possession of a child. But for all the real-world context, it feels like a big hit on the night with a hint of irony (that line “You have a problem with me, you talk to my boss: the Pope”, TO self-aware… right?) and all sorts of creepy antics that suggest you won’t be biased skinarink–Lo-fi realism by Ian. See the poster here:
This will be the battle of the Exorcists on the big screen this year. The Pope’s Exorcist arrives first, in theaters April 14, ahead of the sequel to David Gordon Green’s reboot The exorcist (another Blumhouse collaboration, after their Halloween sequel trilogy) is introduced to us around Halloween. Get your holy water ready, folks!
