The post was reportedly shot at, federal officials said, and inspectors fought back; Ibama asked the PF to tighten up security
BRASÍLIA – Ibama informed on the night of this Thursday 23 that the federal base installed two weeks ago in the village of Palimiú, in Yanomami indigenous land, in Roraima, was the object of an attack. Armed criminals broke through the blockade established on the Uraricoera River and shot IBAMA agents who had boarded one of the vessels. The inspectors reacted. In the shootout, one of the prospectors was injured. He was arrested by the Federal Police (PF) for assaulting civil servants and was hospitalized until Thursday night.
The criminals descended the river aboard seven 12-metre “voadeiras” loaded with cassiterite. The shipment of ore stolen from indigenous land was identified by drones operated by Ibama. After the attack, the criminals fled.
Security at the control base, installed on the 7th, is carried out by agents of the National Public Security Force, the Federal Highway Police and Ibama.
The main objective of the base is to prevent vessels carrying supplies and prospecting equipment from entering Yanomami territory. Since the installation of a physical barrier with steel cables on the 20th, not a single loaded boat has headed for the mines.
“It was a planned criminal attack. Anyone who tries to break through the blockade will be arrested. Putting an end to illegal mining is President Lula’s determination,” said IBAMA President Rodrigo Agostinho.
Ibama asked the PF to tighten security at the base.

The Prosecutor’s Office in the Federal District has opened two civil investigations related to the protection of indigenous peoples during the Jair Bolsonaro government. The administration of the former Chief Executive is already in the crosshairs of investigations by the Federal Prosecutor’s Office of Roraima into alleged lack of aid to the indigenous populations, in particular the Yanomami. He is also the subject of an investigation into alleged genocide, lack of assistance and environmental crimes.
The new investigations were officially opened by the Federal Prosecutor on the basis of preliminary investigation procedures already underway at the General Prosecutor’s Office. On the 13th the orders for the opening of the investigations were signed.
One of them will address the possible practice of administrative impropriety in the management of the National Indian Foundation (Funai). The other concerns the alleged irregularity in the use by the Ministry of Women, the Family and Human Rights of only 44% of the budget foreseen for 2020, “affecting programs linked to policies to protect indigenous populations and quilombola”.
The Bolsonaro government is already the target of other investigations concerning the protection of indigenous peoples. In late January, the Roraima Public Prosecutor’s Office opened a civil investigation to determine how “acts and omissions” by public officials contributed to the humanitarian crisis in the Yanomami Indigenous Land.
According to the federal prosecutor’s office, as part of other ongoing investigations, there is already “a vast collection of evidence for the immediate responsibility” of the state for the crisis devastating the indigenous community.
