The project was still only in the color noise stage for Warner, but now it’s confirmed: the two It films directed by Andy Muschietti will have a prequel series called Welcome to Derry for the American platform HBO Max.
This fiction is inspired by Stephen King’s original novel and will expand the story to explore, in part, the origin of the monstrous Pennywise – played by Bill Skarsgård in a new adaptation released in 2017.
Screenwriter Jason Fuchs will write the series, and the director of the films will direct several episodes, including the first. “As teenagers, we took turns reading chapters of It until the book fell apart.“, the director says in the press release.
He follows: “It’s an epic story that goes way beyond what we’ve been able to do with our movies. We can’t wait to explore the depths of Stephen King’s novel with all its heart, humor, humanity and horror..”
There is currently no word on whether actor Bill Skarsgård will reprise his character’s traits. This announcement of the project is not surprising, considering the great success of both films worldwide. Before starting production on Welcome to Derry, director Andy Muschietti is wrapping up his new feature film, The Flash, which will be released on June 14, 2023.
