Target reforms moderation system and promises to take it easy on ‘first offenders’

The company will focus on awareness and transparency. Nearly 80% of “violating” users do not violate the platforms’ terms again.

Following guidance from the Supervisory Board, Meta has announced a reform of its content moderation system.

WHAT WAS THERE? The company promises to take it easy on users who commit one or another offence, and help them figure out where they went wrong.

This approach, according to Meta’s non-detailed studies, would be more effective at preventing recurrence of terms of use violations.

Until then, Meta often enforced hefty penalties early on, such as blocking people from posting content for up to 30 days.

Under the new system, the general rule is to restrict users’ posting rights after the seventh offense.

OK BUT… Within this general rule, even cases with few warnings can be limited to specific areas of Facebook and Instagram.

Meta offers, for example, the ability to post to Facebook groups.

And, of course, serious violations — posts with terrorist content, child abuse, human trafficking, and others that put the safety of individuals and organizations at risk — continue to face severe and immediate penalties, such as account blocking.

HUMANS ARE GOOD. In the press release, Meta’s VP of Content Policy Monika Bickert says that people are good and bad actors are the exception on the company’s platforms.

Therefore, the company is focusing its efforts on making them understand why the content has been flagged as inappropriate.

“Most of the people on our apps have good intentions. Historically, some of these people have ended up in ‘Facebook jail’ not understanding what they did wrong or if they were hit with a content moderation error.”

Meta admits that it doesn’t always succeed, and this fact too has contributed to the reform of the moderation system. The goal, therefore, is to mitigate unfair sanctions.

Internal company analytics support Monika’s opinion: Nearly 80% of low warning volume users do not violate usage policies again within 60 days following the slip.
