Afraid of the costume, Bette Middler turned down iconic film role
Bette Midle has great regret in her career as an actress. At the age of 77, the artist revealed that she had received an offer to star Change of habit(1992), but refused and claimed “fear of the costume” in an interview on the podcast Just For Variety (via daily mail).
While it’s almost impossible to imagine anyone else in the role of Deloris Van Cartie that is not Whoopi Goldberg, Midle was one of the options. “They came to me with Change of habitand I said, ‘My fans don’t want to see me in a veil,'” he said.
“Can you believe this? How weird and crazy is this? Jeffrey Katzenberg [produtor] called me every day: ‘Please, please.’ I stood my ground because I was too scared of the costume. Isn’t it amazing? I can wear anything but the religious habit of the nuns,” continued the actress.
Bette even praised Whoopi for his excellent work on the film, which received a sequel in 1993: “God bless her. She was perfect for this.”
