When producer Tiago Mello started thinking Mila in the Multiverseseries of disney+ which debuted in February on the platform, little has been said about this concept of parallel universes coexisting as if they were layers.

Today the scenario is very different with the award-winning All everywhere at the same time and Marvel movies and series, such as Loki, Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness and other titles.

“We had the first ideas in 2016. We started doing it before all these productions. It was something I got used to. When I did 3%, Hunger games we arrived together,” the producer tells Estadão. But Tiago seems not to be shaken. Mila in the Multiverseafter all, it’s far from what these American productions do with the multiverse: the Brazilian series uses the concept to talk about diversity.

The plot tells the story of Mila (Laura Light) who, turning 16, discovers a device capable of taking her to parallel universes in search of her mother, Elis (Malu Mader). She soon realizes that this disappearance is only the beginning of the story, as Elis, having discovered the existence of multiple universes, is hunted by a mysterious group. Mila will have to adapt to the challenges with the help of her friends Juliana (Yuki Sugimoto), Vinicius (John Victor) and Peter (Dan Flomin).

“We’re talking about a young woman who is going to advocate for the existence of the multiverse, for a different existence – and who appreciates these differences. She doesn’t find it awful, she likes it. She explores the food, the people, the customs,” she says. “Meanwhile, the villains think that only their universe can exist. It’s a very current discussion in Brazil, in the world, this thing of killing what is different from you. What is different is not there to be destroyed,” says the producer .

Tiago Mello, who is one of the big names behind children’s films and series today, came up with the concept of the multiverse aimed at children. “A teenager who goes to another world, how would she deal with friends who don’t know her? It’s an adjustment that young people go through all the time.”

In fact, things took shape when the idea of putting the series on the streaming platform came to the Mickey Mouse house. An essential partnership to be able to create these universes. “We don’t always have the resources you need. Disney gave us those resources. Each universe of the series has its own world. It’s something really beautiful to explore,” he points out.

Mello sees the potential to go further in the series. “I think it is very important that the audiovisual shows the Brazil that we are. More and more often, in front of or behind the cameras, we have to bring it,” he says. “We think it will resonate with kids all over the world.”
