After several masterpieces to his credit, and these in very different registers – from the thriller The Enigma of Chicago Express, the thriller The Strangers in the City, to the adventure film 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea – director Richard Fleischer tried his hand at the Western genre in 1956 with Bandido Caballero.
The film is set in 1916, in the middle of the Mexican Civil War, and follows Wilson’s character, a mercenary who has stolen in on the cause of the rebels, who sets out to steal a shipment of arms dealers (Zachary Scott). to help Colonel Escobar (Gilbert Roland). Along the way, he falls in love with Lisa (Ursula Thies), a trafficker’s wife.
For the main role, Richard Fleischer will hire Robert Mitchum, whom he met on the set of John Farrow’s Last Laugh. The latter, who also serves as a co-producer through his company DRM Productions, brings all his goofiness to the dark and devilish hero who is powerless in all circumstances.
Filmed in the very place where revolutionaries and government troops were confronted, Bandido Caballero is also striking in its authenticity – most of the Mexican extras experienced these events in particular.
