Rescuers recovered three more bodies on Monday, a day after a wooden boat carrying migrants to Europe crashed into rocks in southern Italy, bringing the death toll to 62, including at least 14 children.
Many of the victims were located near the point where the ship sank, near Steccato di Cutro, a seaside resort on the east coast of Calabria, while some of the bodies were recovered in the still stormy sea.
Dozens of coffins were placed in a sports hall in the nearby town of Crotone, while local people left flowers and candles outside on metal railings to show their respect.
Local officials said 80 people survived the disaster, but between 180 and 200 people are believed to have embarked in Turkey, suggesting many more passengers may have died or gone missing.
The disaster reopened a debate over immigration in Europe and Italy, where the newly elected right-wing government’s tough new laws on migrant rescue charities have drawn criticism from the United Nations and others.
“It is a moment of silence, prayer, recollection and deep meditation. But it is also a moment in which we must responsibly question ourselves about this latest tragedy,” said Bishop Francesco Savino of nearby Cassano all’Jonio, a Roman Catholic diocese in Calabria . .
The charity Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF), which works at the site, said it was helping several people who had lost relatives in the sinking.
