At least 200 students have been removed from school due to poisoning and the case is considered intentional
The Iranian authorities are investigating the poisoning of hundreds of female students in the city of Qom as ‘revenge’ for the role girls have played in the recent protests against the hijab, the dress required by Islamic doctrine. According to Deputy Education Minister Younes Panahi, some people wanted all schools, especially girls’ schools, closed.
According to The Guardian newspaper, the attacks left at least 200 girls out of school for a few days. Last week, parents protested outside the governor’s office in Qom and several schools were closed due to the investigation, which is still ongoing.
The poisoning was done intentionally, according to health committee member Dr Homayoun Sameyah Najafabadi.
The deputy education minister said that “the chemicals used to poison students are not chemicals of warfare”, and that the victims do not need strong cures, as the substances used are curable.
