It didn’t take long for We Have Ghost to become a success on Netflix. The fantasy comedy, which stars David Harbor (Stranger Things) as a friendly ghost, topped the platform’s most-watched movie chart this Monday, February 27, three days after its release.
With the few exceptions of exploring his past life, David Harbor lends his qualities to a handsome bald and mute ghost who befriends a teenager who moves into a house he “haunts.” His supernatural powers notably allow him to change appearance, disappear, and of course pass through walls and objects as well as living creatures.
Major special effects were required to bring Ernest to life, and many Internet users wondered what techniques were used during filming to achieve such a believable result.
But we could imagine that performance photography techniques were used to create a spectral image of Ernest, director Christopher Landon’s interview with our colleagues HollywoodReporter Let us know more about the filming of We Have a Ghost.
“We practiced a lot, I didn’t want the ghost to look like some floating orb, especially with the technology we have today” commented the filmmaker, revealing that the scenes with Ernest had to be shot from four different camera angles.
“It was like shooting four movies at once”
However, the American actor was able to film his scenes with his partners without wearing performance capture sensors, as Christopher Landon explained to our colleagues: “We would shoot a scene with David and the other actors, then another take with David alone, a third take with just the actors, and finally a scene without the actors so that we would have a neutral version.
Ultimately, hundreds of technicians and digital effects artists were needed to ensure both the design and post-production of the film. So it’s a long process, but one that’s clearly been rewarded by the enthusiasm Netflix subscribers have for We Have a Ghost. What does the upcoming release of the sequel suggest, as suggested by the film’s final scene?
