The first live-action image of Sebastian, the stubborn crab tasked with watching over Ariel in The Little Mermaid, recently appeared in a puzzle box. And its design does not attract all Internet users, because it looks too much like a crab.
While the character, who was voiced by David Diggs in the original version, has yet to appear in the trailers, images of the merchandise have been released, giving fans a glimpse of one of the iconic characters from the 1989 classic.
As a live-action adaptation, it makes sense that the animals look like real animals. However, the “live” version of Sebastien doesn’t go over well with certain fans.

Some Internet users I’m sorry that the character is too realistic: “Look, I understand it’s a crab. But I can remind people that this is literally a movie with a walking mermaid and a sea witch octopus. Everything doesn’t have to look realistic.“, while others simply assert Cancel the movie.
for thatothers, Everything will be played at the duplication level: “The film will face the same criticism as The Lion King if the voice acting is not flawless“.
At least a small number are concerned and celebrate the technical progress by comparing the live-action versions of Disney animals to the live-action versions of Garfield and Scooby-doo in the movies.
“I really don’t understand all these comments. People complain that the crab looks like a real crab… I mean, years ago you got those Garfields and Scooby Doos…“
I really don’t understand all these comments complaining about people complaining that Sebastian looks like a crab in real life. I mean, imagine if those guys had been there years ago, getting this Garfield and Scooby-doo, when we could have had the Garfield and Scooby-doo that we had. pic.twitter.com/2CGcoItskU

So it seems that turning an animated animal into a digital version closer to reality is not easy. The same criticism was leveled when the trailer for Jon Favreau’s The Lion King was released in 2019, finding Abu the Monkey in the live-action version of Aladdin or the dogs in Disney+’s Beauty and the Beast. Hobo.
By removing the cartoon elements (big eyes, facial expressions…) from the characters and giving them a more realistic appearance, the studio seems to lose the expressive side.
Note that Rob Marshall’s The Little Mermaid is only at the beginning of its advertising campaign, as Flounder fish (voiced by Jacob Tremblay), Ariel’s best friend, Eureka the sly herring seagull (who will be voiced in ‘Awkwafina VO), Ariel’s father Triton (played by Javier Bardem ) and the witch Ursula (Melissa McCarthy) has yet to be revealed.

Criticism poured in after the casting announcement
After John Musker and Ron Clements were announced as the cast for the live-action version of the film, the film was met with a lot of backlash, in particular for the casting of young actress and African-American singer Halle Bailey in the title role. The latter recently responded to negative comments.
he declares face :”People don’t understand that when you’re black, it’s a different society. It is very important for us to be represented.”
The actress then adds that she was not surprised by the racist comments and the hashtag #NotMyAriel. He explains: “EAs a black person, you expect it, and it’s not really a shock anymore. (…) To be honest, when the teaser came out, I was at D23 and I was very happy. I didn’t see any negatives.”
The Little Mermaid hits theaters on May 24.
