Burny Mattinson, Disney’s longest-serving employee and director of ‘Basil the Mouse Super Detective’, has died at the age of 87.
Burny Mattinson has passed away at the age of 87. Perhaps his name does not ring a bell, but surely you have seen his work. Mattinson had worked at Disney for 70 years as an animator and advisor to the art team and story boardbeing the longest-serving employee of the company.
Mattinson began working uncredited during the Silver Age of Disney animation, and His first job was in ‘Lady and the Tramp’ six months after graduating high school. Mattinson has participated in several of the best animated films in history such as ‘Aladdin’, ‘Beauty and the Beast’, ‘The Lion King’ and several dozen more, in addition to Directing the 1986 film ‘Basil, the Super Detective Mouse’.
The official Disney Animation account confirmed the sad news on Twitter and Instagram by posting a emotional video about the artist’s career:

Walt Disney Animation Studio Creative Director, Jennifer Leealso shared words of endearment in memory of the filmmaker: ““Burny’s artistry, generosity and love for Disney Animation and the generations of storytellers who have passed through our doors for seven decades have made us better artists and better collaborators. Everyone those of us who have had the honor of knowing him and learning from him we will make sure his legacy continues”.
Mattinson stated on several occasions that he had in love with Disney animation after watching ‘Pinocchio’ in theaters in 1940 and, after graduating from high school, he took his portfolio to the House of Mouse in hopes of landing a job. Although his portfolio impressed the Disney security guard, there were no positions available and instead, Mattinson accepted a job with the traffic department from Disney. From there, he was mentored by other Disney employees until he rose through the ranks to become the beloved animator, artist of story board and director who became studio legend.
