Although “The Last of Us” showed us what happened to the world after the apocalypse caused by the Cordyceps fungus and how civilization broke down, the HBO series also had some very funny moments.
A lot of that is thanks to Ellie (Bella Ramsey) and her love of simple jokes and the story she has with Riley (Storm Reid) in episode 7.
Ellie’s personality and demeanor have even made Mexican fans feel like the character might as well have been born in Aztec soil. These are the details they claim prove Eli has a Mexican soul.

Ellie is a fan of arcade machines and runs to play them
In episode 7 of ‘The Last of Us’ Ellie and Riley leave Phaedra’s academy in the middle of the night to explore an abandoned mall.
There they get lots of coins to play on the ‘Mortal Kombat II’ machine, which they are fans of after reading about the game in old magazines.
Many of the fans who were young in the 90s remember the thrill of sneaking out of school to play arcade games.
In addition to Ellie losing to Riley because she had played the machine before, fans also pointed out that there was always someone in the arcade who was an expert and a coin beat everyone.
Ellie is a taco lover in ‘The Last of Us’
When Riley gives Ellie a tour of the mall and promises to show her various “wonders,” the show’s protagonist is excited to see a Mexican restaurant called Macho Nacho.
While this isn’t the “miracle,” Ellie is visibly excited to think she’s going to eat tacos. Even after the revelation, Mexico’s signature dish is still popular.
Elli always carries something in her backpack to protect herself from insecurity
Since the first episode, it has been shown that Elli carries a knife with her or in her backpack to protect herself from the infected, looters, Phaedra’s soldiers and other dangers that appear in her path.
Many of the Mexican fans pointed out that this is something they do, but not to defend themselves from the infected, but to protect themselves from insecurity and some street attack.
Ellie in “The Last of Us” has fun on walks with Riley
Another of the “miracles” Riley shows Ellie is a working carousel inside the mall, where the two get on the horses, ride around, and share a tender moment together.
This has been compared by fans to fairs with rides, food and other attractions usually set up in parks or streets in Mexico. There children and adults will have a good time like Elli and Riley.
Ellie is a fan of joke books in ‘The Last of Us’
Chapter 7 “The Last of Us” shows that Ellie loves puns, especially the “No Pun Intended” books written by fictional writer Will Livingstone.
This resonates with many Mexican fans who have a similar sense of humor and despite the fact that they don’t tend to read many books in Mexico, joke books are in demand.
‘The Last of Us’: Ellie is excited to come across some escalators
In one of the most tender moments of the seventh episode of ‘The Last of Us’, Ellie sees for the first time how an escalator works and has fun climbing and sliding down it.
This reminded fans of how in 2017 the state of Tlaxcala inaugurated its first escalators, which caused a stir on social networks and memes that listed them as one of their biggest tourist attractions.
What other things do you think give Ellie from ‘The Last of Us’ her Mexican soul on the show?
