Bryan Cranston explained that he says the success of Breaking Bad came primarily from the special connection Vince Gilligan created between the community and the character of Walter and its evolution over the course of the show’s 5 seasons:

“I think people felt close to this guy”– said the actor.

“They had sympathy for him, they saw this person who was really trying to instill enthusiasm in science. , faced with the apathy of his students, who was forced to start a second job to take special care of his son. The teaching profession, the healthcare system, all of these played their role.”

“We sympathized with him, and then he has terminal cancer. (…) All won and supported. And then he does something illegal. We tell ourselves we’ll let it go. Then he does something rougher, a little more and so on.”

Bryan Cranston explains that the series presented a somewhat real dilemma to viewers, asking them to choose between morality and attachment to the character:

“Vince Gilligan wanted to see how long Can go on and on about how far he can stray from his original persona while still keeping the audience entertained. So it was a real test. And it’s never been in the history of television to show a hero changing characters over the course of a series. I was won over by this prospect and wanted to be a part of it.”
