Cinema has already tackled several amazing science fiction subjects and time travel is one of the most captivating ones. Whether through special machines, magical items, spaceships or wormholes; the narratives feature endearing characters who need to travel back in time to change their reality and find out how such an attitude was actually a bad thing.

Below, check out a list of movies and series that address the topic and are available on the Netflix streaming service.

Suddenly 30

The film tells the story of Jenna Rink, an ordinary girl who wants to join the group of popular girls at school and is completely obsessed with reaching her 30s, because “30 is the age of success”. On her thirteenth birthday, her popular girl group attends her party and pranks Jenna, which leaves her deeply hurt.

In tears, she locks herself in a closet and wants with all her might to grow up and become a successful woman. Here her wish miraculously comes true and she awakens in a reality where she is 30 years old. That said, Jenna has to stand out to deal with all the responsibilities (professional and emotional) of a grown woman.

The teen version of Jenna is played by Christa B. Allen, while the adult version is brought to life by the performance of Jennifer Garner. The cast includes other key players such as Mark Ruffalo, Judy Greer and Andy Serkis.

The series is an adaptation of the books by Bruna Vieira and was produced exclusively for the Netflix portfolio. Anita is a 30-year-old woman who is dissatisfied with the direction of her life as an adult. After attending her sister Luiza’s wedding, she is confronted with people from her past whom she hasn’t seen in years and she comes home shaken, saddened that she hasn’t been able to change her past to improve her present.

During a crying fit, she accidentally finds a way to travel back in time to when she was 15 years old. In this way, Anita decides to change several decisions right now to improve her life and that of her friends in the future. What she didn’t expect, however, is that these changes would radically change everyone’s future, and not always for the better.

The work features a cast full of well-known names in the media, such as Maisa Silva, Camila Queiroz, Klara Castanho, João Guilherme Ávila, Caio Cabral and many others.

Midnight in Paris

Gil has been writing literature for some time and when the opportunity to travel to Paris with his fiancée presented itself, he accepted as he found the city to be a magical and inspiring place. Unlike the bride, who is very sociable and makes friends easily, Gil is more introspective and cannot enjoy the company of others to the same extent.

Thus, on one of the nights when he decides to walk alone through the Parisian streets, he ends up going back in time, at midnight, to the year 1920. With each trip he takes, Gil meets several important writers, such as F. Scott Fitzgerald and Hemingway, and feels increasingly dissatisfied with continuing in his present reality. While his fiancée becomes suspicious of the reason for these night walks, Gil must find a way to explain what’s going on.

Among the main actors, we can highlight Owen Wilson, Rachel McAdams, Marion Cotillard, Tom Hiddleston, among others.

The Adam Project

The film is a mixture of action, comedy and a lot of science fiction. Adam is a fighter pilot in a dystopian future in 2050 and needs to use his ship to return to the year 2018, where he has to carry out a rescue mission. However, a mistake drops the pilot into the year 2022, where he meets his 12-year-old self. While asking the child Adam for help in repairing his ship, he meets again Laura: a long lost friend.

Laura reveals that she has been stalked by assassins since the year 2050, when she discovered that Maya, the leader of the dystopian world, has gone back in time and made changes that were never meant to happen. Laura has been trapped in this reality for a long time and she convinces the two Adamses to go to the year 2018 to prevent the construction of the time machine from being done, which would destroy the changes Maya has caused in the timeline. Then both Adams travel to 2018 to prevent the time machine from being built.

The film stars Ryan Reynolds, Walker Scobell, Mark Ruffalo, Jennifer Garner, Catherine Keener and Zoë Saldaña.

Michael is a very frustrated architect. This is because he hates spending most of his time working and thinks he has many boring moments with his wife and children. One day he is offered universal control: the object is able to control the universe, such as pausing, rewinding or advancing moments in his life. As he uses the controller more often, he realizes that he has been putting off very important moments in his life, like watching his children grow up.

When he can no longer control time as before, he despairs and searches for the eccentric inventor who offered him control. Michael becomes determined to fix what he did wrong, and for that, he needs to learn that we can’t always control what goes on in life.

The work features such actors as Adam Sandler, Kate Beckinsale, Frank Coraci, Christopher Walken and Jonah Hill.

Dark is another Netflix original series, built on atmospheres of drama, suspense and science fiction. The work presents a reality in which the past, present and future do not follow one another but are connected. Which means that instead of just influencing the past on the future, each of the three times influence each other infinitely. Related to this concept, the series explores time travel and the consequences it can have on each of the different realities.

At the same time, in the present, children begin to disappear in a sleepy town in Germany. The disappearances are similar to others that occurred 33 years ago and 66 years ago, which puts four different families at the center of the whole mystery. This is because these families have influence and keep a secret: the existence of a wormhole, which is located in a cave system, and allows time travel.

The series follows different timelines, with essential characters to help the viewer unravel the main mysteries of the work and how they affect the lives of the city’s residents.

The series stars Louis Hofmann, Lisa Vicari, Andreas Pietschmann and Gina Stiebitz.
