Away from the awards from the controversial episode at the Oscars 2022, Will Smith was honored during the AAFCA (African-American Film Critics Association) ceremony. The actor gave a acceptance speech after receiving the Beacon Award.
Will Smith was awarded for his performance in the film ‘Emancipation’ which was released in 2022. Besides him, director Antoine Foqua and actress Charmaine Bingwa were also in attendance – who co-stars with Will in the film. Listen to the actor’s speech:
I want to thank Gil and the AAFCA. I want to thank all of you in this room for doing what you do, keeping our stories alive. I want to thank Apple, because the initial budget was one thing. And then the budget was another thing. And Apple has never wavered […] It was the first time I heard from a studio that the story was more important than what it cost to make… They make iPhones. They can.

In an interview with Variety, Bingwa said that Will Smith was very considerate of other actors during the filming of the film. “There was a scene where people were supposed to be lying dead in a tunnel… And Will just said, ‘You guys are doing a fantastic job. I know it’s very difficult. After that, he gave everyone $1,000 out of his own pocket,” Bingwa said, concluding, “he’s just a nice guy.”
