Formula E: Dieter Gass returns to Formula E, now as technical and sporting advisor

Dieter Gass joins Formula E in a new role as senior sporting and technical adviser, reporting to the co-founder and director of Formula E.

With extensive knowledge across several motorsport championships, including Formula E itself, Dieter Gass was announced this Friday (3) as Senior Technical and Sports Advisor for the category. In his previous role as head of Audi Motorsport, Gass was responsible for the German manufacturer’s successful entry into the championship, with highlights including Audi winning the teams’ championship for the 2017/2018 Formula E season.

As part of his new role, Gass will play a key role alongside Alberto Longo, working collaboratively with the FIA ​​on sporting and technical matters to ensure continued growth and the achievement of the long-term goals and visions of the ABB FIA World Championship Formula E. As well as maintaining the high standards of technical development that the FIA ​​and Formula E have maintained since their inception, he will also work with the FIA ​​and other stakeholders to maintain and implement a clear plan for the future.

“Together with the FIA, we have set a clear roadmap for the sport,” said Formula E CEO Jamie Reigle of Gass’ appointment. “But the question is how does the technology, the race car and adjacent technologies like charging serve the vision of the sport? We needed someone with credibility who could really drive that agenda for us in partnership with the FIA ​​and ensure that we are delivering an excellent product.”

Despite the fact that Formula E has only hosted five rounds of the season 9 and GEN3 era so far, work is already underway for the championship’s GEN4, which will be introduced from season 13 onwards.

Have a figure who can liaise with the FIA, teams and manufacturers and analyze how any changes could affect the sports team, the purpose of the championship and the “spectacle” – as Reigle describes it, referring to the growing entertainment values ​​of off-network events – it’s critical.

“You need the right timing. Clearly looking at the end of the decade we knew we needed someone strong to lead this area for Formula E and advise the FIA. We also wanted someone with experience working with manufacturers,” continued Reigle . “Also, we wanted someone with Formula E experience. During the selection process, that level of credibility and knowledge becomes even rarer, so we are delighted that Dieter Gass is taking on this challenge.”

As well as working with Formula E for several seasons, Gass has extensive experience in endurance racing and Formula 1. He has worked with Toyota F1 since 2001 before moving to Lotus as sporting director for the 2010 season.

“I remember first being involved with Dieter when he was at Audi. He is obviously someone with extensive motorsport experience, working for a number of manufacturers. He has been involved in Toyota’s Formula 1 programme, several endurance. and then, of course, Formula E. From a pure perspective, given the experience he has had developing winning race teams and leading the technical projects associated with them, we are very excited to be able to sign someone from his caliber”.

Helping to stimulate and develop the future rounds of the championship, Gass will be an invaluable asset as Formula E continues to grow and grow.

Formula E is currently in its ninth season. Five races have been held so far and the world leadership belongs to the German driver Pascal Wehrlein, of the TAG Heuer Porsche team.
